Job Overview - Railcar Mechanic
As a Railcar Mechanic, you will play a hands-on role in maintaining and repairing railcars to meet industry and safety standards. Your work directly supports safe rail operations and uninterrupted freight movement. This is a physical, skilled position well-suited for individuals with mechanical aptitude who enjoy working with tools and seeing tangible results from their efforts.
A Day in the Life
Railcar Mechanics are actively engaged throughout their shift inspecting, repairing, and maintaining railcars. Typical duties include: • Inspecting railcars for defects or wear • Repairing or replacing steel components • Cutting, grinding, and welding worn or damaged parts • Using torches, welders, grinders, and hand tools • Troubleshooting mechanical issues • Following all safety procedures and identifying hazards
No two days are exactly the same. You'll work independently and as part of a team, think critically, and take pride in restoring railcars to safe, service-ready condition.
What You'll Bring
• Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn • Safety-first mindset and reliable work ethic • High school diploma or GED • Valid driver's license • Ability to work in an outdoor, industrial environment
Prior railcar repair experience is not required. Certified welding experience is preferred, and all necessary training, tools, and PPE are provided.
