Scope of Job
To perform clinical radiological studies in the operation of diagnostic radiographic equipment for diagnostic and evaluation purposes as ordered by the provider.
Description of Duties
• Operates proficiently and with proper understanding various x-ray control consoles, tube assemblies, lock systems and patient tables in order to perform diagnostic procedures for all ages within UT Health RGV clinical sites. Has knowledge of safe radiographical procedures, uses lead shielding for all areas as appropriate.
• Ensures the correct patient name, unit number, date, right or left markers on the films and proper ordered diagnostic study performed for proper identification and medical/legal reasons. Maintains patient care, service and customer excellence in all areas.
• Understands and capably demonstrates the proper use of all radiological parameters such as phototiming, kilovoltage, seconds, distance, intensifying screens, film speeds and grids to produce radiographs of acceptable contrast, density, and detail on the first imaging to avoid over exposure of radiation to the patient and low repeat ratio.
• Assesses the patient’s overall condition, and makes the necessary, safe improvisations in technique and multiple radiographical positions to compensate for the patient’s needs as necessary for standardized projections. Understands and uses principles of body mechanics and body alignment when turning, moving and transferring patients.
• Organizes, anticipates, and prioritizes the components of each patient’s procedure to finish in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with practice standards.
• Prepares the correct oral contrast media or food consistency, when needed, and assists the provider/speech language pathologist with administration as needed.
• Has knowledge of sterile field. Assists with sterile field and maintains sterile integrity at all times.
• Keeps work area clean and safe, maintains equipment, periodically cleaning without damage. Reports all malfunctions to supervisor immediately.
• Responsible for maintenance and accuracy of all paperwork, electronic archiving, reports, and all records. Responsible for coordination with all professionals who will participate in the diagnostic exam.
• Responsible for maintaining necessary supplies and stock levels, and orders ahead to maintain proper inventory. Maintains non-expired inventory.
• Performs CPR if needed, and is current on all related policies and procedures.
• Monitors and records all protocols for mechanical, electrical, radiation and fire safety and ensures that all policies are followed consistently.
• May be required to provide coverage at other clinical sites as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
Associate’s degree in Radiologic Technology or successful completion of two year accredited Radiologic Technology program to contain courses of study in fluoroscopy.
Preferred Education
Bilingual preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist ( CMRT ) by the Texas Medical Board or Texas Department of State Health Services;
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists ( AART ) registered or registry eligible;
CPR Certified
Required Experience
One (1) year of related experience.
Preferred Experience
Experience in inpatient or outpatient radiology such as freestanding x-ray or imaging center.
Equipment
Use of standard office equipment. All radiology equipment, positioning ancillaries, and other ancillary equipment to be successful in properly completing diagnostic study, computer, and electronic medical record system. Use of protective lead shielding when indicated. Use of specialty equipment which requires proper training and knowledge of not only clinical procedures to obtain the studies but control and tracking of radiation exposure.
Working Conditions
Needs to successfully perform all required duties. Clinical Environment; some lifting, moving, and positioning of patients and equipment; some travel and weekend work may be required. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Possible exposure to Radiation and other infectious diseases. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Possible exposure to combustible materials. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
Other
Knowledge of radiation safety and continued education as required and proper knowledge of required documentation. Excellent customer service skills. Tact, diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality of medical information required in all matters.
