The City of Rockville Recreation and Parks Department is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Racquet Sports Instructor to lead high-quality instructional programs in tennis and/or pickleball for youth, teens, and adults. This position plays a key role in supporting the City’s commitment to providing accessible, engaging, and developmentally appropriate racquet sports opportunities to the community.
Instructors will plan and deliver lessons, ensure participant safety, provide excellent customer service, and create a positive and motivating learning environment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Supervisor for the Teens & Adventure Sports Division.
Essential Job FunctionsPlans, organizes, and leads racquet sports classes (tennis or pickleball) for a variety of ages and skill levels.
Provides high-quality instruction aligned with industry standards (USTA, USA Pickleball, or similar).
Demonstrates proper technique, rules, and game strategy in a safe and engaging manner.
Sets up and breaks down equipment before and after each class.
Monitors class participation, enforces facility and program policies, and ensures safety at all times.
Maintains accurate attendance records and communicates promptly with the supervisor about participant updates or concerns.
Provides exceptional customer service to participants, families, and the public.
Assists with seasonal program planning, session evaluations, and light administrative tasks as assigned.
Represents the City of Rockville in a professional and positive manner.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
Prior instructional, coaching, or competitive playing experience in tennis or pickleball required.
Experience working with youth and/or adults in a recreational, educational, or athletic setting preferred.
Experience with class management, group instruction, or progressive lesson structures is highly desirable.
Special Requirements
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must pass a background check in accordance with City of Rockville policies.
Must be available for scheduled class times, which may include evenings and weekends.
Must be able to work outdoors and lift/move equipment up to 25 lbs.

Strong knowledge of racquet sport rules, technique, and teaching methodologies.
Ability to adapt instruction to multiple skill levels.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to maintain a safe, organized, and supportive learning environment.
Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
Certificates & Licenses
Preferred but not required:
USTA/USPTA, PTR, or professional pickleball certification (IPTPA, PPR, or similar).
CPR/First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
