The Assistant Director of Communications will assist the Communications Director in managing the overall strategy and day-to-day activities of the communications office. Responsible for strategic thinking as it relates to various projects across the state so key messages can be crafted. Helps with speeches, media training and assist with strategies to ensure they are integrated across various platforms. Will serve as an editor for press releases and other material written by the communications team. Responsible for managing the planning and execution of high-level communications for strategic communications efforts and other projects as assigned that includes the development of annual reports, annual accomplishments as well as identifying ideas to tell NCDOT’s story. This position involves planning, developing, executing and evaluating communication strategies and plans for policies and high-level transportation projects to educate citizens and other stakeholders on the department and its programs. This position will manage and mentor team members within the communications office. This position interacts directly with the Transportation Secretary, N.C. Board of Transportation, deputy secretaries and other senior management as well as division engineers and other employees. This employee is responsible for writing news release, articles, writing speeches, communication plans, crisis communication plans, media relations and providing external customer service. Position will be on an on-call rotation and will be on-call during crisis situations.
