Public Affairs Manager

We are looking for a Public Affairs Manager to join our Sustainability and Corporate Affairs team, focusing on stakeholder engagement and issues management.  

As the Public Affairs Manager, you will play a key role in managing and strengthening relationships with local governments, community stakeholders, and field leadership across our U.S. footprint. This role will support strategic engagement, advocacy, and issue resolution while aligning our presence with our corporate values around community connection, culture and belonging, and sustainability initiatives. This is a high-impact, external-facing role that requires a skilled communicator, strategic thinker, and proactive relationship-builder who can navigate local issues, represent the company’s values and business objectives, and advance our reputation in the communities we serve. This position reports directly to the SVP, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

Government & Community AffairsServe as a primary liaison to local governments in designated regions, building and managing relationships with municipal leaders, agencies, and community-based organizations.Monitor, assess, and respond to local policy issues, zoning, permitting, and regulatory matters that impact our business operations or brand reputation.Advocate for Dollar Tree’s interests while identifying opportunities for collaboration on shared community goals.
Stakeholder EngagementBuild trust and long-term partnerships with key local stakeholders, including nonprofit leaders, business coalitions, advocacy groups, and community influencers. Represent the company at local meetings, events, public hearings, and forums to demonstrate commitment and active engagement. Engage with trade associations and other stakeholder groups to represent and advocate for Dollar Tree’s interests.
Field Support & AdvocacyPartner closely with field, store, and distribution center leaders to strengthen their role as local ambassadors, providing them with tools, training, and support for relationship-building with local leaders.In partnership with communications, develop and distribute internal communications, briefings, and talking points to support store-level advocacy and outreach efforts.Support store and distribution center openings, as well as market expansions, by engaging external stakeholders on the company's commitments and anticipated impact.  
Issues ManagementIdentify emerging community issues or risks that could affect brand reputation or operations; develop mitigation strategies and manage local response.Serve as a crisis communications partner in collaboration with communications, legal,  operations, and talent teams.
Culture & Belonging, Social Impact & SustainabilityCollaborate with internal teams to align local engagement with company-wide culture & belonging, community, and sustainability initiatives.Promote community programming and partnerships that reflect our values, support diverse voices, and enhance social and environmental impact.Program Infrastructure & Strategy DevelopmentHelp build foundational systems and scalable processes for the company’s Public Affairs program, including stakeholder databases, engagement trackers, and performance metrics.Contribute to the development of internal playbooks, toolkits, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for local engagement, advocacy, and issue response.Support the evaluation and evolution of the Public Affairs strategy, including data-driven reporting, benchmarking, and continuous improvement initiatives.Collaborate cross-functionally to align public affairs efforts with asset protection/safety, communications, compliance, facilities, legal, operations, real estate, and talent strategies Oversee external agencies and lobbyists as needed.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs, Political Science, Communications, or a related field (Master’s preferred).5+ years of experience in public affairs, government relations, community engagement, or corporate responsibility—ideally within a multi-site retail, logistics, or service-oriented company.Deep knowledge of local government systems and community dynamics across diverse U.S. geographies.Strong political and cultural acumen with the ability to navigate sensitive issues and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.Proven ability to work cross-functionally with internal leaders and external partners.Comfortable with travel (~40%) to markets and community events.Start Rate = $115,000-$125,000 based on experience plus 20% bonus and equity.
