Job Summary:
Provides psychiatric patient care in Inpatient Mental Health, along with completing hospital-wide consultations specifically in the emergency room, med surg/ICU, and OB. Nurse Practitioner assesses individuals by conducting a diagnostic assessment, gathering history, reviewing medical records, gaining collateral, completing a physical exam along with appropriate diagnostic tests. He/she formulates diagnosis, guides the medication regimen and implements treatment plan according to practice guidelines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct Care- Provides psychiatric NP services including conducting diagnostic assessments with the patient and gathering additional pertinent information (i.e. record review, collateral interviews) therapeutic service that meets evidence-based practice standards, provides patient and/or family education, and demonstrates effective treatment. Serves as an examiner in the evaluation of patients who may be dangerous.Coordination of Care- Coordinates care within the inpatient mental health unit by attending rounding. Collaborates with other care providers, social services, nurses, and other entities (as applicable) along with family (as applicable). Provides admits and follows inpatients. Makes rounds to meet with patients as determined by patient’s needs and Medical Staff Bylaws. Completes consultative services throughout the hospital, as needed. Treatment Planning- Determines medical necessity, and appropriate treatment modalities; initiates and carries out individual treatment plan appropriately based on individual’s problems/diagnoses and patient needs. Records Management- This provider creates comprehensive diagnostic assessments and progress notes that meet documentation standards and medical staff by-law requirements. Documentation contains all required elements to meet compliance standards. Provides patient and family education explaining recommendations and treatment alternatives.Treatment Team participation- Provides pharmacological management services. This provider is an active member of the treatment team, is approachable for consultation and is willing to coordinate care and treatment planning. Participate in multidisciplinary staffing on Inpatient Mental Health to provide professional guidance for patient care. Utilizes appropriate sourcing of supervising physician for clinical decision-making support.Organizational/Community Involvement- Incorporates comprehensive discharge planning in the scope of treatment.Provides consultative services to primary care physicians, emergency department, med surg/ICU, OB, and other physicians/APC throughout the organization. Serves as examiner in the evaluation of patients who may be dangerous to self or others as requested by the Court.Education, Training or Degree Required:
Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
License/Registration/Certification Required) (credentialed through medical staff)
Licensed as an N.P. in the State of Minnesota
Current CPR certification is required.
Experience and Skills:
Minimum of one-year experience as an NP
Good verbal and written communication skills required.
Ability to relate well to patients, physicians, hospital staff and public required.
Demonstrated leadership abilities required.
