Project / Staff Accountant
Position: Project Accountant (High-Growth Construction Firm | Path to Controller/CFO) Location: Berlin, CT (On-Site) Pay: Up to $90,000 annually, commensurate with experience Strong long-term growth potential into senior leadership. Position Overview We are seeking a highly motivated Project Accountant to join a growing construction firm headquartered in Berlin, CT. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced, project-driven environment and is looking for a long-term career path into senior financial leadership, including potential advancement to Controller or CFO. The Project Accountant will play a critical role in overseeing project-level financial operations, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting month-end and year-end reporting, and partnering closely with Project Managers and senior leadership. This position offers exposure to all facets of accounting and finance within a rapidly expanding organization that works with high-profile clients such as ESPN, Raytheon, and Yale. Key ResponsibilitiesProject & Financial Accounting + Prepare and analyze financial statements and management reports using Sage 300 and Excel + Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and bank statements + Track and maintain cost-to-complete and project profitability reports + Engage in projects from inception through closeout + Assist with month-end and year-end close processes Accounts Payable & Receivable + Prepare customer invoices, including AIA billing + Record and manage AR transactions and cash receipts + Process AP invoices and oversee check runs + Set up and maintain customers, projects, and vendors in the accounting system + Assemble and maintain subcontractor W-9s, insurance certificates, and compliance documentation + Maintain vendor communication, resolving discrepancies and outstanding issues via phone and email Tax, Audit & Compliance + File sales and use tax + Assist with internal and external audits + Maintain accurate records in accordance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements Collaboration & Leadership Development + Work closely with Project Managers to ensure financial accuracy and forecasting + Support onboarding and guidance of junior accounting staff + Assist with special projects, process improvements, and system enhancements + Gain increasing exposure to budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning Required Qualifications + 5+ years of accounting experience in a construction environment + Strong understanding of: + Project accounting + General ledger + Accounts payable and receivable + Experience with AIA Billing + Proficiency in Sage 300 and advanced Excel + Strong communication and organizational skills + Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment Preferred Qualifications + Experience in a small to midsize construction firm + Demonstrated interest in long-term career growth and leadership + Ability to contribute to process improvements and provide creative, practical solutions Work Environment & Growth Opportunity This is an on-site position within a collaborative, close-knit accounting team at a construction firm experiencing significant and sustained growth.
