Project Environmental Scientist

Job Description

As a Project Environmental Scientist, you will use your expertise in planning on various NEPA assignments, making independent decisions on complex issues, and may supervise junior staff. You will produce reports, complete analysis, or studies that successfully shape the future of communities and help them thrive.  

While PEL experience is beneficial and certification as a planner (AICP) is a valuable asset, neither is mandatory.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Provide high-level project development and review of project documents and report quality for complex projects, including Federal Highway Administration project environmental reviews and documentation Participate in transportation project environmental reviews and documentation Perform QA/QC and ensure delivery of completed reports, policies, and studies meet quality standards and project objectives Research and interpret current and upcoming regulatory and procedural requirements Prepare project documentation and ensure alignment with scope, schedule, and budget Collaborate on the development of standards and/or guidelines for planning activities within the team Collaborate to develop standards and guidelines for team planning activities Execute complex assignments independently, developing new techniques and procedures as needed Coordinate across Olsson teams and direct design efforts for master plans Partner with project managers to implement design plans, monitor progress, and flag potential issues Contribute to scope and scheduling; may facilitate public meetings Build and maintain relationships with developers, agencies, and community stakeholders to meet local needs Work collaboratively to promote efficiency and produce high quality work May supervise and review the work of junior staff Maintain project and client data in the firm’s management system

You bring to the team:

Strong communication skills Ability to contribute and work well with a team  Bachelor’s degree in planning, policy, political science, or related areas of study  A minimum of 6 years of experience in planning   NEPA transportation decision making experience  Ability to coordinate and conduct agency, public and stakeholder involvement  An understanding of Section 4(f) and 6(f) requirements in Federal Highway Administration projects  Solid interpersonal and decision-making skills and the ability to generate innovative and effective solutions to complex problems  Ability to represent Olsson in a professional manner at all times
