Your Opportunity
Our Canada East based Transportation Business Line has a need for a Jr. Project Controller in a full-time permanent capacity, based in one of our offices in southwestern Ontario (Markham, Mississauga, Hamilton, and Waterloo). As Project Controller you will be working closely with the team of Project Managers and Leadership in the Transportation Business Line to provide financial and change management support on scope, schedule, and cost throughout the life cycle of projects. Our projects are multi-discipline, engineering, water, landscape architectural, planning, etc. that can include some or all the following project phases: conceptual, preliminary design, detailed design, and construction phases. As a project controls professional at Stantec, you will utilize your expertise in financial planning, scheduling, cost controls, communications, and problem solving in a fast-paced, professional environment to assist the Transportation team with project delivery and program development.
Your Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Budgeting
- Collaborate with Project Managers (PMs) to establish initial project budgets, work breakdown structures (WBS), and baseline cost/schedule plans.
- Regularly develop and update project forecasts, including Estimate at Completion (EAC), Estimate to Complete (ETC), and cash flow projections.
- Support the preparation of change orders and contract amendments, ensuring all scope changes are accurately reflected in the budget and schedule.
- Oversee the setup of new projects within the internal financial system to ensure alignment with contractual structures.
- Monitor the progress of projects to evaluate financial risks, identifying potential overruns or variances before they impact profitability.
- Utilize Earned Value Management (EVM) and other metrics to track labor utilization, productivity, and overall project performance.
- Act as a bridge between technical leads and PMs to monitor resource allocation, ensuring staffing levels align with the project budget and accounting constraints.
- Manage the monthly invoicing process, including the review of Work in Progress (WIP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) to ensure timely collections and revenue recognition.
- Support the development and administration of sub-consultant agreements, ensuring their costs are monitored and reconciled against the prime contract.

Financial Management & Operations

Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure all project management activities comply with internal company standards (e.g., Stantec’s Framework) and external ISO standards.
- Prepare and present high-level financial results and risk assessments to upper management.
Capabilities and Credentials
Technical Expertise & Contract Literacy
- Understanding of various contract types (Lump Sum, Time & Materials, Cost Plus) and their unique impacts on revenue recognition and risk.
- Proven ability to integrate change order management into the project baseline without disrupting ongoing performance tracking.
Software & Data Management
- Experience maintaining "audit-ready" project files, ensuring all financial decisions and adjustments are backed by clear, defensible documentation.
- Must be proficient in MS Office skills, with advanced skills in MS Excel (Pivots, V-Lookups, X-Lookups, SUMIFS etc.). Experience with Financial/Cost systems (Oracle, etc.) is preferred.
Education and Experience
- A four-year degree in Engineering, Accounting, Business, or a related field that blends technical project knowledge with financial literacy.
- Ideally 0–3 years of experience, making this a perfect fit for ambitious freshers or junior professionals looking to grow into project management.
- Exposure to the full "cradle-to-grave" project lifecycle, including initial setup, monthly monitoring, and final close-out.
- Proven ability to perform financial analysis, cost management, and scheduling tasks with high attention to detail.
- Readiness to quickly master internal financial systems (ERP) and project control tools while maintaining data accuracy.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

**Pay Range:**
• Locations Outside of Lower Mainland - BC & Various locations in Ontario-$58,400.00 - $81,800.00 Annually
• Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$61,900.00 - $86,700.00 Annually
**Pay Transparency:** In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
