Position Overview
We are seeking a Principal/Senior Video Research Engineer to join a small, highly focused research team of video technology experts at MediaKind. We work autonomously, with a strong sense of ownership and purpose, driving innovation across video processing, compression, and delivery.
The team leads speculative research and develops proof-of-concepts (PoCs) in strategic video technology domains. You’ll explore emerging areas, propose innovative ideas, and contribute to MediaKind’s technical thought leadership, both internally and externally.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct exploratory research and develop PoCs in key technology areas such as video/media processing, compression, and delivery. Build tools for technology evaluation, benchmarking, and experimentation. Collaborate with engineering and product teams to facilitate technology transfer. Identify new challenges and application domains in video technologies relevant to MediaKind’s strategy. Produce technical reports, PoCs, and foster knowledge-sharing across the organization.
Contribute to MediaKind’s technical leadership:
Serve as a subject-matter expert on video technologies across the company and in external engagements. Present ideas and research clearly to both technical and executive stakeholders, generating support and buy-in. Publish technical papers and demonstrate innovations at conferences, workshops, and industry trade shows. Partner with academic institutions and industry collaborators to lead or support research programs. Contribute to the growth of MediaKind’s IP portfolio through patent filings.
Drive innovation aligned with business goals:
Interface with customer engineering teams to understand key challenges and opportunities. Work with architects and product management to design innovative and competitive technology solutions. Help prototype the core technologies that power next-generation MediaKind products.
Mentor and grow talent:
Support and mentor junior engineers, interns, or PhD research students to help them build strong technical and research skills.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Technical Expertise Deep experience in at least one of the following areas: Video signal processing and compression (e.g., pre-/post- processing filters, codecs, quality metrics) Machine learning or deep learning (ideally applied to video/image problems) Media systems and video delivery protocols (e.g., IP, HTTP-based streaming) Programming and Development Strong programming skills in C/C++, Python, including ML/DL frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow Familiarity with software engineering practices and version control tools (e.g., Git) Research Experience Proven track record in: Technical publications, academic collaborations, or joint research programs Participation in standardization bodies or technical forums Patent generation and IP analysis Education & Background Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Image/Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Multimedia Networks, or related fields Experience designing, structuring, and leading research initiatives Demonstrated ability to present complex technical ideas effectively across different formats (written, oral, live demos) Preferred Experience in corporate or academic research environments Knowledge of product lifecycles and experience transitioning PoC technologies into real-world products
