Principal Mechanical Engineer

 As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will drive the successful specification, selection, design, and performance of equipment for manufacturing sites as well as coach and train other engineers and technical resources. This position will build and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders to effectively implement capital equipment, drive productivity results, optimize value, and promote growth. This role interacts with individuals from Manufacturing, Engineering, Continuous Improvement, Procurement, and other key Business Units within the Supply Chain.  This role will also work directly with the manufacturing sites to develop, modify, and implement plans for equipment improvement as well as with equipment OEM’s on their equipment offerings and designs.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering; a master’s degree in mechanical engineering is a plus.  Other engineering disciplines will be considered with relevant experience.  This individual will also have experience with the design of manufacturing equipment and equipment modifications, developing new equipment specifications, leading design reviews, and developing and executing capital projects in a manufacturing environment.  A candidate with Food and Beverage or CPG (Consumer Package Goods) and plant production line experience is considered a strong plus.  Knowledge of high-speed filling, packaging technologies are ideal areas of expertise.

Responsibilities:

Determine root cause physics of failure and provide recommended corrective actionsProvide facilitation for DFMEA, FMEA, and similar activities.Write machine specifications with input from stakeholdersParticipate in technical design reviews to assess project status and design readiness.Approval of equipment design, development, and executionDefine performance criteria, aid with schedules and capital budgetsDefine key process parameters and testing methods with the Packaging Engineering teamProvide criteria for acceptance testing of equipmentProvide technical project assistance to project managers and plant personnelDrive Technical knowledge/documentation management and department communication/deliverablesOptimization of vertical startup methodologiesMSA and SOW development with Procurement and LegalDrive lean and standard work principles to ensure team/department efficienciesBuild strategic relationships and communications with internal customers, stakeholders, and external Partners.

Travel:

This individual will travel primarily to North American operations and sometimes internationally, up to 75% of weeks.  We work hard to operate remotely as much as possible and to reduce unnecessary travel.

Total Rewards:

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering; other engineering disciplines will be considered with relevant experienceMaster’s degree is a plus10+ years of engineering experience, preferably in packaging equipmentSelf-motivated, highly energetic, and able to drive multiple projects simultaneouslyPast machine design experience and knowledge of machine shop practicesModeling skills and use of 3D & 2D softwareExperience with DFMEA, FMEA, and similar risk analysis toolsProcess engineering knowledge; DOE experience, statistical skills, and use of statistical softwareStrong documentation skills and knowledge of GD&T; knowledge management skillsKnowledge of machine and plant control systems is a plusKnowledge of primary packaging equipment, secondary/tertiary packaging equipment, coffee processing equipment, and/or materials/processes is a plusKnowledge of plant infrastructure and operationsStrong leadership, process, and communications skillsAbility to work in a team atmosphere.Ability to coach and train othersAbility to uphold safety standards, participate in continuous process improvement on the job, and follow best practices.
