Principal Engineer I - Wireless / WiFi Operations

Are you ready to drive engineering activities that will take Spectrum’s telecommunications and signal processing systems to new heights?  As a Principal Engineer I – Wireless/WiFi is a senior technical leader responsible for the architecture, design, and operational excellence of Charter’s wireless access technologies, with a primary focus on WiFi and converged mobile wireless solutions. The role combines deep architectural leadership with hands-on operational stewardship—defining roadmaps, driving platform evolution, establishing design-to-operations standards, mentoring engineers, and partnering across product, engineering, operations, and vendor teams to deliver scalable, high‑performance, and reliable customer experiences.


How You’ll Make an Impact Design, implement, monitor, enhance and troubleshoot systems in assigned areas Analyze and revise existing system logic difficulties and documentation as necessary Test and review system designs Provide engineering technical support and guidance to regional personnel and ensure all technical integration, changes, standards and documentation are met Mentor and guide the work of technical staff Review work plans and design and advise on improvements Adhere to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable Know, understand and follow company policy Working Conditions Office environment 
What You’ll Bring to Spectrum Required Qualifications Education Master’s or bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field or related work experience Experience 5+ years engineering work experience 5+ years project management work experience Skills Ability to read, write, speak and understand English  Basic knowledge of related industry specifications and standards IEEE, ANSI, Fiber (Multimode, Single mode, UTP, etc.), Bridging, Switching, Routing, Ethernet and Transport technologies and protocols  Basic knowledge in network design, network architecture, protocols and network topology  Basic knowledge in TCP/IP and the OSI Model  Basic knowledge in using ticketing and software tools to support the current operations Basic knowledge of network devices and basic network appliances  Basic knowledge of network designing software, such as Visio  Ability to perform duties in a very fast-paced environment and ability to learn new technology quickly  Ability to use personal computer and software applications  Preferred Qualifications Education Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)  Industry and vendor specific certifications and training preferred (Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, etc.) Certified Wireless Network Expert (CWNE)VMware Certified Professional - Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCVSkills Knowledge of Spectrum products and servicesTroubleshoot routing/switching/Firewall/Transport (Layers 1–7), DNS, DHCP, and IPv6; analyze live packet flows.Experience in Wi‑Fi or network operations with direct break/fix ownership in live environments (NOC/call center/carrier experience a plus).Strong routing/switching fundamentals; deep OSI model knowledge (up to L7) and solid L1 understanding.DNS, DHCP, IPv6, and packet‑flow troubleshooting proficiency.Working knowledge of AAA concepts and Linux command‑line operations.At least 1 year of automation with Ansible and/or Python.Education: Equivalent experience valued; Bachelor’s + 1–2 years NOC experience considered wellCarrier/ISP operations background; experience with broadband edge.Vendor‑agnostic wireless controller skills (e.g., Ruckus, Cisco, Aruba).Load balancing and GSLB familiarity (e.g., A10, Anycast).Observability tooling (Grafana, Splunk, Netscout) and strong service documentation habits.Relevant networking/wireless certifications.

The base pay for this position generally is between $110,800.00 and $196,400.00. The actual compensation offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. We comply with local wage minimums and also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of other incentive-based compensation such as bonuses.
