Principal Engineer - Azure Kubernetes

Job Description

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY? Join RBC's Cloud Platform Engineering team as we build next-generation container orchestration capabilities on Azure. You'll architect enterprise-grade Kubernetes solutions that power critical banking applications, contribute to upstream open-source projects, and establish technical standards for one of Canada's largest financial institutions. This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge cloud technologies while mentoring engineering teams and driving adoption of containerized infrastructure across the organization. You'll be the recognized technical authority for Kubernetes at RBC, shaping our multi-cloud strategy and ensuring our platform meets the highest standards for security, scalability, and operational excellence.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

• Architect and implement Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) platform with enterprise security, compliance, and scalability requirements

• Lead technical strategy and design decisions for container orchestration across multiple engineering teams

• Contribute to upstream Kubernetes projects and maintain cutting-edge expertise in container technologies

• Collaborate with security teams to establish Kubernetes frameworks, policies, and control objectives

• Design multi-tenant AKS environments supporting diverse application workloads with advanced networking and monitoring

• Design and implement platform capabilities to support Agentic workloads and AI/ML applications on Kubernetes

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to development teams adopting Kubernetes patterns and Azure integrations

• Deliver technical deep-dive sessions and architectural reviews to engineering communities

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?

Must have:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field

• Expert-level proficiency in Kubernetes architecture, operations, and ecosystem tools with demonstrated production experience

• Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure services, particularly AKS, networking, security, and infrastructure-as-code

• Proven track record of architecting and implementing enterprise-grade container platforms at scale

• Strong programming skills in Go, Python, or similar languages with experience in cloud-native development

Nice-to-have:

• Active contributions to upstream Kubernetes projects or CNCF ecosystem tools

• Experience with multi-cloud container orchestration strategies and hybrid cloud architectures

• Background in financial services or regulated industries with compliance and security requirements

• Expertise in service mesh technologies, observability platforms, and advanced Kubernetes operators
