Job Summary:\rThe Registered Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the Director of Sleep Services or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and out of center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. The Registered Polysomnographic Technologist is able to perform the duties defined for a sleep technologist and is able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff. The Registered Polysomnographic Technologist is credentialed in sleep technology.\rCore Responsibilities and Essential Functions:\rSleep Study Procedures\rFollow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.\rPerform appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments.\rFollow lights out procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.).\rPerform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify, correct and document artifact.\rDocument routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.\rImplement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).\rFollow lights on procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeat the physiological and instrument calibrations and instruct the patient on completing questionnaires, checking for completeness, etc.).\rScore sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.\rScore clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing AASM standards.\rGenerate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.\rDemonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.\rDemonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.\rPerform patient education and instruction appropriate for out of center sleep testing.\rDemonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures for portable monitoring devices.\rDemonstrate adherence to AASM scoring parameters for OCST; identify artifact, inadequate signals and study failures and generate an accurate report.\rSleep Study Preparation and Set-up\rCollect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).\rDetermine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.\rReview the patients history and verify the medical order.\rFollow sleep center protocols related to the sleep study.\rWhen patient arrives, verify identification, collect documents and obtain consent for the study.\rExplain the procedure and orient the patient for either in center or out of center sleep testing.\rSelect appropriate equipment and calibrate for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.\rApply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.\rPerform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desentization.\rService Management and Professional Issues\rComply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.\rPerform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.\rMaintain current CPR or BLS certification.\rMaintain certification in sleep technology.\rAcquire 10 Continuing Education Units (CEU) to maintain credential.\rDemonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position.\rDemonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.\rDemonstrate appropriate social skills.\rDemonstrate customer service skills.\rDemonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision.\rDemonstrate teamwork skills.\rFollow HIPAA policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.\rDemonstrate ability to follow direction.\rRespond to sleep patients procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.\rProvide patient education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.\rAdhere to sleep center policies related to quality assurance.\rEvaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.\rReview and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.\rDemonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.\rComply with professional standards of conduct.\rAssist the medical director and/or Director of Sleep Services in all aspects of sleep center operations.\rPerforms other duties as assigned\rComplies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.\rRequired Minimum Education:High School Diploma General or GED General or Associates Diagnostic Medical Sonography-Preferred\r\rRequired Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):\rAll certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.NBRC-SDS - Sleep Disorders Specialist or RPSGT - Registered Polysomnographer or RST - Reg Sleep TechnologistBLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor\rAdditional License(s) and Certification(s):\ra Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) that possesses the Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.
