Job Title: Phlebotomist Department: LaboratoryLocation: Massena HospitalHours Per Week: Full-Time, 40 Hours/WeekSchedule: Varied Shift SUMMARY The Phlebotomist performs blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, following professional guidelines and standards and taking into consideration the condition of the patient and site, age group, and the type of test requested by the health care provider. The Phlebotomist also ensures all required information and documentation is accurately, timely, and correctly submitted and adheres to the professional standards of the American Society of Clinical Pathology. RESPONSIBILITIES + Applying knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic and sterile techniques and phlebotomy equipment, performs blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, selecting the phlebotomy site taking into consideration the condition of the patient and site, age group and the type of test requested by the health care provider. + Perform finger or heel sticks for micro-samples of capillary blood on neonates to adults as required. + Selects proper vacutainer tubes for testing using various sized needles, syringes, and or butterfly collection devices in order to collect appropriate specimens for testing. + E nsures that all specimens are properly, accurately and completely labeled, and that the proper documentation initiating testing is submitted with all required documentation. Contacts the appropriate patient care unit, physician office or outpatient clinic when specimens are incorrectly identified or submitted, obtaining additional needed information and/or patient information in order to ensure proper testing and interpretive data is received. + Performs duties and responsibilities related to the handling and transport of laboratory specimens, including receiving and accessioning specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations, conducting order entry and patient registration in reference lab information systems, accessioning specimens, receiving test results from reference laboratories, transporting specimens from the point of collection to the lab for processing. + Assists Laboratory technical staff as needed, performing tasks such as retrieving and printing reports, separating and preparing specimens for the reference laboratory, logging specimens in laboratory computer system, etc. + Delivers completed lab reports to Emergency Department and other areas of the hospital as needed. + Explains procedure to patient before beginning and cleans patient's skin in the area from which blood is to be drawn. + Collects blood samples by micro collection techniques and venipuncture, finger, toe or heel stick as required for infants, children, adults, and elderly patients. + Draws specimen for blood cultures and alcohols which requires special preparation of patients. + Completes chain of custody forms and collects for urine drug screens and also performs Breath alcohol testing per DOT regulations following training and certification. + Reports changes in patient's behavior or condition to nursing personnel + Draws blood and collects other specimens as required for patients in nursing homes and other health care facilities in which the hospital provides phlebotomy services. + Notifies Medical Technologist, reporting the status and location of the specimen, when a sample has been collected. + Signs requisition and notes the date and time of collection. Logs the specimen in the laboratory information system. + Disposes of used needles according to hospital procedures and returns specimen to the various laboratory departments. + At all times, provides service excellence and service recovery in the delivery of services to patients and in interaction with internal and external partners. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: + Possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and/or families in order to gain their cooperation and alleviate apprehension + Previous experience as a phlebotomist, nursing assistant, or other allied health care worker + High School Diploma or Equivalent UNION: CSEA - Civil Service Employees Association (MH) Note: Not all per diem roles are union eligible EDUCATION: LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting. PAY RANGE: $19.65 - $28.79 The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components.
