Job Summary
Pharmacy Technician positions are available in the adult acute care setting. Looking to create a diverse team to help perform patient care activities. Locations include Central Pharmacy, Central Pharmacy Cleanroom (sterile compounding), Operating Room (OR)/Cardiovascular Center (CVC), Adult Emergency Services (AES), and the Pavilion Pharmacy Satellites. Specific areas and shift times are available depending on current area needs.
General Pharmacy Technician duties may include:
Prepare and package non-sterile compounded pharmaceuticalsPrepare sterile products, injections and IV chemotherapy Fill automated dispensing cabinets on nursing unitsCorrectly distribute and account for controlled substances usageDeliver medications to nursing units including surgical roomsStock medications shelves, manage inventory dating, return excess stock to inventory, properly dispose expired medications or return to manufacturerPrepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols Respond and triage telephone and electronic message inquiriesAssist the Pharmacist with auditing controlled substance utilizationComplete restocking and dispensing activities using pharmacy automationReceive orders and prepare and package medications for outside clinicsBuild various medication kits, providing support to many different professionsConduct admission medication historiesAssist the pharmacist in resuscitation baysPerforming pharmacy cleaning and documentationAssist with training of staffOther duties and special projects as assigned by supervisor to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medicationsWork in a highly collaborative environment including Pharmacists, Pharmacy Managers, Technician Supervisors, and other medical professionalsMission StatementMichigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Pharmacy Technician Associate:
Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements. This includes: A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire, or a full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires.Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills.This position requires primary source verificationPharmacy Technician Intermediate:
Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements. Pharmacy Technician Senior:
Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements. This includes: A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire, or a full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires.One or more years of relevant pharmacy experience.Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills.This position requires primary source verification
Pharmacy Technician Graduate:
Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experienceEligible for licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan Pharmacy or currently licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan (Temporary License or Full License). If the individual is not licensed, they will be required to obtain a Temporary Pharmacy Technician License on or before the hire date (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable). The individual will then be required to obtain a Full Pharmacy Technician License within 6 months of hire into a Pharmacy Technician Associate position, or before the expiration of the Temporary Pharmacy Technician License (whichever is sooner).
Desired Qualifications*
At least one year of technician experience or completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is highly desirable. Basic algebra including performing pharmacy calculations is also highly desired.
Licensure & CertificationThe State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.
Work ScheduleFull Time positions are available on days, afternoons, or midnights. Technicians are expected to work every second weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and provide holiday coverage. Technicians' main work area will be at the University Hospital or Cardiovascular Center or Kahn Pavilion. Those hired on the OR Team may additionally rotate to Brighton Center for Specialty Care or East Ann Arbor Pharmacy. Weekend only schedules may be considered.
