SUMMARY
Responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing the set-up and operation of the heart-lung machine and related equipment for open heart surgical patients. Maintains a high degree of skill in operating and maintaining equipment and an understanding of the principles and methodology of current perfusion techniques and pacemaker technology. Participates in the marketing of the perfusionist service to the Medical staff. Maintains active communication with the Medical staff, peers, and the Perioperative staff. Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Clinical Practice:
Implements perfusion practice and pacemaker procedures, in accordance with hospital policy and procedure, departmental, area and national standardsDemonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to patients from the age of thirteen (13) years onChooses appropriate oxygenator and accessory equipment in accordance with current perfusion standards and medical staff preferenceAssembles, primes and inspects the integrity of the bypass circuitMaintains sterile technique during the use of all equipmentOperate heart lung machine and keeps the surgeon informed of patient status. Attempts to maintain normal physiologic parameters according to current perfusion standards of practice during the bypass period (i.e. - blood pressure, blood gas values, blood flow rates)Interprets lab data and takes appropriate action to correct abnormal values. Works in conjunction with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to provide optimal careRecognizes, evaluates and corrects all emergency perfusion situations which may arise during the bypass periodPrepares and administers antibiotics and other drugs used during the bypass periodAssists other perfusionists by drawing blood samples and performing appropriate lab studiesEvaluates new equipment in the surgical setting, providing feedback and recommendations to the Nurse MangerPerforms preventative maintenance calibration and cleaning of all equipmentMaintains accurate and complete records of all procedures and ensures proper placement in the patients chart and permanent perfusion recordAssists in the insertion of permanent pacemakers.
