Overview

The U.S. News adult methodology ranks clinical specialties and rates common care procedures and conditions. Christian was nationally ranked as “high performing” in the clinical specialty of geriatrics and in the following seven of 21 common procedures and conditions: heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, diabetes, COPD, pneumonia and stroke. High performing in a specialty means we were in the top 10% nationally of all evaluated hospitals for that specialty or procedure and condition.
Northwest HealthCare, six miles west of Christian, offers 24- hour emergency care, the Sleep Disorders Center and a variety of outpatient diagnostic and imaging services.
Perfusion Department conducts cardiopulmonary bypass during cardiac surgery. This includes responsibility and accountability for selection of CPB equipment and techniques, administration of medications, intravenous solutions and the assessment and implementation of other cardiopulmonary support measures/modalities as required.

Role Purpose
Under the general supervision of the chief perfusionist and attending physician, the staff perfusionist provides extracorporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary bypass and related perfusion activities during surgical procedures.
Responsibilities
Conducts cardiopulmonary bypass including, but not inclusive of the procedure to be performed. Selects supplies required for the procedure, sets up, primes, and tear down of the equipment.Administers pharmaceuticals and intravenous solutions under the supervision of attending cardiothoracic surgeon or anesthesiologist.Evaluates new technology released by industry to assess its effectiveness and/or improvements to patient care; instructs and mentors peers on the use of equipment and supplies.Selects, sets-up, operates and monitors the extracorporeal membrane oxygenator systems, ventricular assist devices, and paracorporeal lung assist devices according to hospital protocol.Transports patients out from originating entity on extracoporeal devices by ground transportation and may participate in the transport (mobile or fixed-wing) of patients supported by extracorporeal devices to outside hospital.Minimum Requirements
