The Payroll Tax Manager is a critical role responsible for leading a team to ensure payroll tax compliance and accuracy. This position reports to the HR Services Leader for North America. This role requires an experienced professional with a strong background in managing payroll tax processes, including filings and audits. It is designed for a strong, incident-driven manager who can bring structure, ownership, and clear communication to a live environment where payroll accuracy and system integrations actively impact the business.
The Payroll Tax Manager will drive tracking, accountability, and cross-functional coordination across payroll and multiple system teams. The role is heavily focused on ensuring that the right people are accountable for the right outcomes. This is a hands-on operational position focused on ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness while leading, supporting, and developing the payroll tax team.
The successful candidate will bring structure, control, and confidence to the payroll tax processes. The ideal candidate is comfortable stepping into a complex environment, quickly assessing issues, and collaborating across payroll and related functions to improve effectiveness. This role will work closely with the North American Payroll Manager and partner with Corporate Tax, Legal, and Accounting Operations. This leader will also be responsible for building and refining processes to drive greater efficiency and accuracy.
We will count on you to:
Ensure that Federal, State, local and Provincial taxes are paid timely, that POAs are up to date, SUI taxes are up to date and that entities are properly registered by business line.Coordinate inbound audits from Federal, state or local entities and work with MMC corporate tax team as well as Legal if needed as well as complete BLS and other government agency requests.Provide metrics and dashboards of payments allocated, fines paid/mitigated, audits completed, and other key metrics related to employment tax payments.Work closely with accounting team to properly allocate tax payments to GL.Lead, manage and provide coaching / feedback to individuals as well as teams to develop and enhance both individual and team performance.Handle real-time decision making, approving time off requests, organizing meetings, project planning and providing direction.Monitor work volumes, systems & resources to ensure the teams meet their objectivesEnsure SOPs and business processes are current and that teams are trained in these processes understanding compliance requirements and take ownership to update, enhance and build new processes where needed.Monitor ServiceNow cases, provide direction and final approval/resolution on exception and complex issues, overriding system directions as neededAct as an escalation point for complex cases or cases requiring special handlingSupport the management of business relationships with internal partners and external vendors.Manage any system changes/enhancement with the vendors in concert with any internal stakeholders.Deliver operational efficiency through transition of work utilizing internal partners and key vendorsCollaborate with internal HR Services departments as well as other Marsh COEs to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.Support current and future operational changes in scope of work completed by HR Services.What you need to have:
