Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Specialist to efficiently process bi-weekly payroll for approximately 2,000 employees. The role requires a thorough understanding of federal and state tax calculations, as well as expertise in preparing and submitting both manual payroll checks and direct deposits. The candidate will manage payroll records, reconcile and prepare Union deduction payments, and address employee inquiries regarding payroll matters. Additionally, the position involves processing Withholding Orders in compliance with federal and state laws.
Responsibilities
+ Process bi-weekly payroll for 2,000 employees.
+ Have a full understanding of federal and state tax calculations.
+ Prepare and submit manual payroll checks and direct deposits.
+ Void and reverse issued checks.
+ Collect banking information for direct deposit setup.
+ Maintain and document all payroll records.
+ Reconcile and prepare Union deduction payments.
+ Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll issues or concerns.
+ Process Withholding Orders in accordance with Federal and State laws for employees.
Essential Skills
+ Minimum of 2 years of payroll processing experience.
+ Experience handling payroll for a volume of 500+ employees.
+ Proficiency in data entry.
+ Basic Excel skills with working knowledge.
+ Proficient in processing in-house payroll.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ English/Spanish bilingual is a plus.
+ Experience with in-house manual payroll (timecards, bonus, cutting checks) is a plus.
+ Workday experience is a plus.
+ Knowledge of garnishment is a plus.
+ Advanced user of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present confidently and effectively.
+ Expert attention to detail with strong analytical and organizational skills.
+ Proven ability to be decisive, resolve issues, and deliver on commitments.
+ Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and multi-task in an environment of multiple responsibilities.
+ Able to independently problem-solve and make decisions.
Work Environment
The role is based in a robust accounting department of 50 people, offering flexible start times between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM as long as the start time is consistent each day. The position requires working a full 8-hour day, totaling a 40-hour work week. The payroll team consists of 7 members.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bethesda, MD.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.04 - $31.25/hr.
