Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Patient Support Technician, Operating Room Day Shift.
In this role, the successful candidate Assists the professional staff in the care of patients and families by completing assigned patient care tasks; provides competent, safe, and compassionate care with emphasis on an understanding of the challenges faced by hospitalization, undergoing procedures or diagnostic tests; provides support to the unit in the maintenance and safety of supplies, equipment and the environment; demonstrates NYULMC Core Values in all aspects of job performance.
Job Responsibilities:
A. Assist in Preparation / Set Up and Post Procedure
1.Place necessary furniture and equipment in the OR including but not limited to
back tables, prep table, mayo stands, ring stands IV poles etc.
2.Set up suction canisters with tubing, assist as directed with electro-cautery, video
equipment, laser equipment and other required items.
3.Assist in placing appropriate OR table drape / linen sheet.
4.Retrieve appropriate positioning equipment and assist in positioning patient.
5.Assist in moving and positioning the patient as needed.
6.Provide clean and newly made appropriate post op bed e.g. bariatric bed, PACU stretcher,
or wheelchair. Add O2 tank for each bed / stretcher.
7.Assist in moving the post-operative patient to the recovery room bed.
8.Provide assistance as requested by surgical team.
B. Environmental Care
1.Clean cabinets including shelves weekly and work counters daily or sooner if visibly soiled.
2.Clean specimen refrigerators weekly or sooner if visibly soiled.
3.Keep storage areas clean and tidy including but not limited to stock rooms, equipment
room.
4. Clean and disinfect OR equipment prior to patient use.
5. Stretchers must be on placed one side of the hallways at least 3 feet away from electrical panels, fire extinguishers and EXIT doors.
C. Maintenance of Solution and Warmer Cabinets
1. Clean the warmers weekly or sooner if visibly soiled. Document in the log book the date of
cleaning.
2. Replenish and arrange neatly folded blankets, sheets and gowns
D. Care of Special Surgical Equipment, Instruments and Supplies:
1. Clean and disinfect specialty equipment according to Infection Control guidelines.
2. Distribute processed instrument sets, equipment and supplies to appropriate work and storage areas.
3. Maintain O2 cylinders. Replace empty tanks and place in proper storage / holder. Full
tanks are separated from empty. O2 tanks must always be in its proper holders.
4.After cleaning and disinfecting equipment that will not be immediately used, place in designated storage location.
E. Maintenance of Floor Stocks and Supplies
1. Stock OR entrances with surgical hats, hoods, and booties.
2.Replenish and arrange neatly supplies including scrub brushes, nail cleaners, masks and
booties.
3.Check and replenish stock levels of specimen containers, enzymatic solutions, plastic bags,
suction bottle liners, etc.
4.Return unused supplies to its proper storage locations
F. Care of Specimens
1. Take Specimen to appropriate lab as directed by the Operating Room (OR) Registered
Nurse (RN).
G. Transportation of Patients
1. Demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality, privacy, dignity, and rights.
2. Demonstrates an awareness of the needs and behaviors of specific age groups and different cultures.
3. Uses a clear, caring and respectful communication style with patients and families, nurses and other members of the health care team.
4. Transport patient pre-op and post-op as needed
5. Identify patient before pick up using the following identifiers: name, date of birth, and
medical record number (MRN).
6. Ensure patient safety e.g. stretchers side rails up and comfort e.g. warm blankets.
H. Care of Stretchers and Wheelchairs:
1. Check that all stretcher and wheelchair are in good working condition. If in need of repair
remove and put repair tag with the date, location, and description of the problem. Inform
the nurse manager or designee.
I. Errands Outside the OR
1. Transport blood specimens / blood products and other stat specimens to the appropriate
laboratory.
2.Pick up medication from the pharmacy
3. Specific errands in the cluster assigned.
J. Completes annual mandatory competency checklists.
K. Participates in the orientation process of new staff and gives guidance to team members unfamiliar
with equipment.
L. Participates in unit meetings.
M. Performs other duties in specific clusters as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a High School diploma or equivalent required. Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading and writing abilities, other language an asset; demonstrates ability in computer skills; demonstrates ability in sterile techniques and equipment readiness. Demonstrates physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $45,867.18 - $50,761.61 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
