Patient Safey Manager - Full Time

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Patient Safety Manager reports to the Assistant Vice President of Patient Safety and leads the implementation of the hospital-wide patient safety program. In this role, the manager collaborates closely with patient safety officers, risk managers, frontline clinical staff, and quality and safety teams to strengthen a culture of safety and improve patient safety outcomes.

 

The Patient Safety Manager works with Quality and Safety Leadership to evaluate and establish patient safety priorities aligned with the organization's strategic and operational objectives, such as patient safety indicators, and is responsible for operationalizing these priorities and leading initiatives to prevent and reduce associated safety risks. The role ensures the timely identification, review, and follow-up of safety events, facilitating dialogue among key stakeholders and subject matter experts. Safety events are identified through the incident reporting system, review of quality data including patient safety indicators and hospital-acquired conditions, leadership rounding, and interactions with frontline staff.

 

The Patient Safety Manager oversees case review and apparent cause analyses, developing and implementing actionable recommendations to address identified safety issues. The Patient Safety Manager partners will clinically risk management for root cause analyses activities and follow-up.

 

In addition, the Patient Safety Manager proactively identifies patient safety risks, develops mitigation plans, and supports the implementation and ongoing maintenance of safety initiatives. A key component of the role is facilitating the sharing of lessons learned from safety events across the organization to promote learning, transparency, and prevention of recurrence. The manager also oversees the hospital's daily morning safety huddle program to support ongoing communication, learning, and continuous improvement and participates as directed in organizational committees and meetings.

 

Success in this role requires effective communication to navigate differing perspectives and drive meaningful change across the organization. The Patient Safety Manager must demonstrate sound judgment, establish credibility with diverse teams, maintain professional knowledge and competence in patient safety, and apply critical thinking and analytical skills to design and implement improvement initiatives. Collaboration across the organization and health system is essential to advancing patient safety goals.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION:

Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required) in healthcare related field and 5+ years in a healthcare-related role. Master of Arts or Science (Preferred) in healthcare, business, patient safety and/or health policy-related field Equivalent Experience, Or 2+ years in a healthcare-related leadership role

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

Current healthcare professional licensure required (Preferred) CPPS and/or CPHQ certification preferred (Preferred) Six Sigma Green Belt / Lean Certification (Preferred)

 

EXPERIENCE:

Clinical Experience, or 2+ years Direct patient care or strong technical knowledge of administrative, operational, and/or clinical healthcare functions 1+ years Relevant patient safety experience preferred 1+ years Coordinated, prepared, and/or participated in regulatory survey, 1+ years' Experience in project management or portfolio management or 1+ years Relevant experience applying process improvement methodology or Relevant alternative training

 

Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

 

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

 

Demonstrates the technical competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.

 

This position requires frequent walking and standing with occasional bending and stooping.

This position reports to Assistant Vice President, Patient Safety.
