Outdoor Afterschool Program Leader
Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual position of Outdoor After School Leader.

The Adventure Earth programs engages children, youth and families in nature-based experiential programs in environmental/earth education, youth leadership, and outdoor recreation. We use the principles of Earth Education, including the use of characters and story telling.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Delivery & Facilitation:Lead daily after school sessions focused on outdoor adventure, environmental education, and experiential learningFacilitate activities such as nature walks, survival skills, team challenges, outdoor games, and creative environmental projectsAdapt programming to meet the developmental needs, interests, and abilities of diverse groups of children and youthEnsure activities align with Adventure Earth Centre philosophy, curriculum goals, and safety standardsCommunicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding daily highlights and any concernsSafety, Risk Management & Supervision:Maintain constant supervision and ensure the physical and emotional safety of all participantsAssess environmental risks and modify plans as needed based on weather, space, and group needsFollow all HRM & Adventure Earth Centre policies, guidelines, emergency procedures, and incident-reporting protocolsConduct daily equipment checks and ensure materials are used safely and responsiblyAdministration & Training:Track attendance, program evaluations, and participant information as requiredAssist with documentation such as incident forms, behaviour notes, and program logsSupport data collection for program improvement and reporting to managementParticipate in staff meetings, training sessions, and debriefs to support continuous improvementQUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:Must have a first aid certification, valid through to June 30, 2026 or willing to obtainMust have experience leading either children or youth.Considered an Asset:Advanced first aid or wilderness remote first aidStudies in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education, Early Childhood Education or similar coursesPrevious leadership experience with outdoor, environmental and/or earth educationPrevious experience working with persons with disabilities.Conditions of Employment:Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS trainingCopies of certification must be submitted upon hiringMust be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check

WORK STATUS: Casual Full-Time. Starting immediately – June 30th, 2026

HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday 2:30 – 5:30pm. 

SALARY: Non-Union; $17.50 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay). (Min. wage +$1).

WORK LOCATION: Adventure Earth Centre - Shubie Park (Fairbanks Centre - 54 Locks Rd, Dartmouth)
