JOB SUMMARY
The Hospitality Manager will provide oversight for the full scope of Gerlach hospitality services, specifically staff dining and food preparation, social/communal bar spaces, and the SHART transportation program. This role requires collaboration cross-departmentally with the Department of Public Works and other departments during the season. This role will report to the Associate Director of Nevada Operations and have three direct reports.
This is a temporary, full-time, Exempt role, based in Gerlach, NV, running from April to October 2026.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Leadership / Management (50%)
+ Oversight of planning and implementation of operational elements for feeding crews in Gerlach and at the Ranch, including but not limited to overseeing more than one kitchen and meal transportation. Assist with menu planning as needed to ensure nutritional needs are met.
+ Oversight of planning and implementation of operational elements for our bar/social/communal spaces in Gerlach, at the Ranch and also Shoreline, including cross departmental collaboration with DPW.
+ Attend Burning Man Staff Meetings as requested.
+ Do bi-weekly reviews of Procurify, Expensify and budgets/actuals for both departments.
+ Review and update Job descriptions and SOPs for Hospitality, Saloon, Kitchen and SHART teams.
Communications (15%):
+ Maintain clear and regular lines of communication with Kitchen, Bar, Shart Managers, providing regular reports and feedback as necessary.
+ Create a cohesive strategy for NVO communications that highlights the care, feeding and transportation of our crews.
+ Help disseminate important information and updates regarding meals, events and the shuttle service to the staff.
+ Work with the NVO Personnel Manager to prepare written and verbal communications to NVO staff to update on Slack and the Compass.
+ Assist the kitchen manager & assistant kitchen manager during the event, by delivering meals from the playa commissary to Fly Ranch & BRS.
Budget Oversight (20%):
+ Develop accurate budgets based on a clear understanding of scope for each project and mentor staff on how to work within a budget.
+ Create annual budgets following a review of staffing and other expenses during the previous cycle; prepare justification for budget variances in the coming year.
+ Provide guidance on spending decisions to your staff/departments under your purview.
+ Work with managers to schedule and coordinate projects aligned with their budget.
+ Monitor changes to project scope and operating schedules that may affect costs. Keep NVO AD apprised of any changes.
+ Accurately track spending; assist with gaining approval for emergency spending.
+ Review and approve the bills for materials, equipment, and services.
+ Collaborate to finalize contracts, monitor vendor performance, and negotiate final payments.
Other Functions and Responsibilities (15%)
+ Create thematic events for staff and Gerlachians.
+ Abide by the rules and codes of conduct described in the NVO Leadership Toolbox, Keyhole, and Ranch Protocols.
+ Lifting and unloading food as needed.
+ Perform various other duties as assigned.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
+ Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
+ Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
+ Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages and inspires their team.
+ Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
+ Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
+ Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
+ Knowledge of kitchen management, menu planning and nutrition.
+ Knowledge of bar management.
+ Knowledge of scheduling and time management.
+ Familiarity with Burning Man and experience in event-based production work, 3 years event related experience.
+ Proven leadership and senior management experience, 3 years managing both departments and individuals.
+ Continuously leads by example, motivates teams, and has excellent interpersonal skills.
+ Fastidious nature; thorough, thoughtful, and meticulous.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills.
+ Operates with a high level of integrity; honest, transparent, and genuine.
+ Acts with discretion and shows good discernment of sensitive information.
+ Remains patient and professional toward coworkers and staff in any situation.
+ Must be willing to relocate to Gerlach.
Preferred
+ Proficient at working in Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc).
+ Knowledgeable in the development and implementation of database solutions.
+ Experience with public speaking.
+ Has prior experience overseeing a volunteer workforce.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
+ Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Compensation: Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated salary range for this position is $_ 1200 _ to $_ 1500 _weekly.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
+ Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore, this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and exposed to fumes or airborne particles, as well as possible extremes in temperature.
