As a Network Operations Engineer at UW-IT, you’ll play a critical role in building and maintaining one of the largest and most advanced networks in higher education—supporting 85,000+ students, faculty, and staff, UW Medicine’s hospitals and clinics, and global research operations. Your perspective and experience will be honored and your impact will be felt far beyond the campus. **What You’ll Do:** Design, configure, and maintain network infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls, etc.) Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues in a 24/7 environment Optimize performance and implement technologies like OSPF, BGP, IPv6, QoS, SNMP Document systems and contribute to knowledge sharing across teams Collaborate with security, systems, and support teams across the University Support cutting-edge projects in education, healthcare, and global research **What You Bring:** **Required** + Minimum of four years experience network troubleshooting and incident management in a large and complex network environment + Must be self-directed and able to appropriately manage workloads, priorities, and provide timely communications to stakeholders and management + A Network Engineer is expected to have expertise in contemporary network technologies and protocols including fiber optics, SONET, DS3, DS1, Ethernet, TCP/IP, OSPF, MPLS, BGP4, IPv6, SNMP, QoS, MLPPP, VoIP, etc + Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills and personal interaction abilities + Must have a valid driver’s license to occasionally operate state vehicles **Desired:** + Core networking experience in a large research university or large enterprise + Experience with Network Management Systems.. (e.g. Solarwinds, Auvik, etc.) + Experience with firmware evaluation and bug investigation + Demonstrated understanding of interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for LAN hardware including L3 routers, L2 switches, hubs, and wireless access points.
