Merchandise Process Transformation Intern

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
The Merchandise Process Transformation Intern (reporting to the Supervisor of Merchandise Process Transformation) should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, proficient in all Microsoft Office applications (specifically, but not limited to, PowerBi, Excel, and PowerPoint), Data Analytics Major/Minor is strongly encouraged, SSMS/SQL directional knowledge is preferred, strong attention to detail, a positive attitude, fast learner, and a team player. The Merchandise Intern will support the broader merchandise strategy by partnering with Category Managers to analyze and forecast key business performance indicators, evaluate contract and category-level performance, and deliver insights that help optimize financial and operational outcomes. Responsibilities include monitoring in‑month performance trends, assessing the effectiveness of promotional and non‑promotional initiatives, and reporting on results across both MUSA and QC.
As an intern at Murphy USA within the Merchandise Department, you will gain a strong understanding of the retail convenience industry, engage with multiple functional areas across the business, and have the opportunity to present your findings and recommendations to Merchandise Leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Collects, updates, builds, and maintains business models to meet the needs of the organization.
Perform data mining, product level sales reporting, margin projections and growth projections.
Host regular promotional meetings with Category Managers to run forecast models, input promotions, and communicate these promotions to the appropriate departments/vendor.
Document processes and incorporates them into Merchandise Playbooks.
Creates communication templates for sharing changes to the field
Regular review and analysis of the cost/retail position of the categories with the Supervisor.
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Pursuing a degree in business or related area of study at an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Experience with PowerPoint, PowerBi, and Excel preferred.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, the general public, and other employees of the organization. Ability to read, analyze, and understand general business/company-related articles and professional journals; Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to read, analyze, and understand common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents; Ability to respond to complex or difficult inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
