Position Summary:
The Medical Technologist (MT) performs various complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses. The MT is responsible for confirming the accuracy of test results by recognizing anomalies and knowing how to correct problems with the instrumentation. Monitors, screens, and troubleshoots analyzers. Performs equipment validations, calibrations, quality control, statistical control of observed data, and the recording of normal operations.
Key Outcomes:
+ Performs waived and moderate complex tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Director.
+ Follows all laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
+ Performs proficiency testing ensuring that PT samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
+ Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documenting Q.C. results.
+ Follows required instrument operation, calibration and maintenance, including documentation of calibration and maintenance.
+ Maintains the integrity of the laboratory process by recognizing factors that could introduce error and rejects contaminated or sub-standard specimens.
+ Follows the laboratory’s Corrective Action policies and procedures and documents corrective action whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
+ Must be able to identify problems that adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. The problem must either be corrected by the Medical Technologist or reported to the Laboratory Director.
+ May assist in the training of new testing personnel.
+ May write test procedures.
+ Performs other duties as requested by the Laboratory Supervisor.
+ Participates in continuing education programs.
Education/Experience:
+ Must have a bachelor’s degree in a biologic science, which includes a year or more of study in an accredited Medical Technology Program.
+ Must be certified by an accredited agency, or have the equivalency of the following: MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA), or MT(AMT).
+ Documented training applicable to the types and complexity of testing performed.
Skills/Knowledge/Competencies (Behaviors):
+ Independent analytical judgment and the ability to work under pressure.
+ Excellent problem solving skills and attention to detail.
+ Demonstrated skills for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, and specimen handling, preservation, processing, transport and storage.
+ Working knowledge of the operation of all laboratory instruments, including preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration.
+ Skills required for implementing all standard laboratory procedures including the performance of each test method
+ Working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
+ Ability to implement quality control policies and procedures.
+ Awareness of the factors that influence test results and the skills required to assess and determination of the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control values prior to reporting patient test results.
Physical Requirements:
+ Requires prolonged sitting, standing and occasional bending.
+ Requires normal range of hearing and manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard, telephone, photocopier, calculator and other office equipment as needed.
+ Requires ability to work under stressful conditions, occasional irregular hours and emotional stamina to appropriately express oneself and exchange information with co-workers, anxious and upset patients and internal and external customers.
+ The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
+ Requires periods of intense concentration and the ability to prioritize tasks.
