**Job Description** **_$4,000 recruitment incentive for eligible new employees joining the UW Medicine team._** **Who we’re looking for:** The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a **Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) 2** with the **Medical Laboratory Science Program** at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake. This University of Washington Medical Laboratory Science Program MLS 2 position is a student laboratory instructor. This role, under the direction of the MLS program director, builds and administers interactive student activities in both the laboratory and classroom setting. They also provide instructional feedback to students and grade their submitted work. This position also interacts with faculty both within and outside of DLMP ensuring that class materials are taught and learning assessments take place on schedule. Lastly, with the MLS program team, the MLS 2 ensures that the UW MLS program complies with all external accrediting requirements from the University, State, and program certifying organizations. **Work schedule:** + 100% FTE + Monday - Friday + Day shift + Occasional telework; schedule to be discussed with the hiring manager **What you’ll contribute:** _Student Laboratory & Lecture Teaching Responsibilities_ + Manages a teaching load of approximately 60 students in the student laboratory, classroom and clinical rotations. + Teaches in assigned laboratory sections, to include laboratory demonstrations, lectures (in-lab and in-classroom), and case study discussions. + Creates and assists in the review and grading of laboratory exercises submitted by the students. + Grades lecture exams, laboratory practical exams, and/or final exam. + Assists with student evaluations. + Performs continuous updating, tracking and developing of methods and/or procedures to teach certain principals. + Continuous evaluation on whether certain exercises are effective and/or require improvement, using independent judgment to revise the course. + Assists with curriculum content revisions and attends annual curriculum review meetings in assigned disciplines. _Clinical Rotations Teaching Responsibilities_ + Directs clinical rotations for students in the assigned disciplines. + Coordinates clinical rotation scheduling and communication with site trainers. + Develops, evaluates, and grades all rotation assignments and assessments. + Maintains Clinical Resources Website and Canvas for assigned rotations. + Assist Program Director regarding affiliate clinical sites where appropriate. _Student Laboratory General Responsibilities_ + Independently manages the student laboratory including but not limited to: + Being responsible for laboratory preparations, to include laboratory setup/cleanup, specimen procurement and preparation, reagent, standard, and control sample preparation, and maintenance of bacterial stocks. + Orders and inventories all supplies. + Maintains a clean and functional laboratory environment that includes the routine organization of supplies and occasional surplus of excess materials. + Performs or coordinates preventative maintenance of all instrumentation and equipment. + Assists in the evaluation of new instrumentation or new methods. + Responsible for laboratory safety including student safety, annual safety inspection requirements, maintaining personal safety competency and following all safety requirements in regards to PPE, proper storage and disposal of chemicals and biohazardous wastes, trainings and ongoing changes to guidelines. _MLSP General Duties_ + Communicate with Medical Laboratory Science Program faculty and other educational instructors as appropriate regarding the operation of the program. + Serve on the student application committee. + Attend program meetings and events. + Maintains ASCP or other certification in accordance with the guidelines of the certifying national organization. + Maintains MLS competency in all assigned disciplines. + Ensure program compliance with all applicable organizations + Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director. **What you’ll need:** + Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory OR equivalent education/experience AND + Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division AND + Two (2) years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience.
