Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a strong foundation in both technical and project management skills, specifically for the mechanical aspects of IR payloads. The candidate will be responsible for leading mechanical systems for IR payloads and subsystems, from requirement allocations and flow downs to specification and interface definition, as well as compliance verification. The role involves detailed mechanical design of precision mechanisms for IR payloads, including optical gimbals, bearings, twist capsules, deployment mechanisms, flexures, and mirror mounts for cryogenic applications.

Responsibilities

Lead small to mid-sized cross-functional design teams for IR payloads and mechanical subsystems.Collaborate with Manufacturing and Procurement during the build and test phases of mechanisms.Prepare and present internal and external presentations and reviews.Author Preliminary Design Reviews (PDRs), Critical Design Reviews (CDRs), and other required design reviews.Perform trade studies to determine optimal designs.Assist with schedule, cost, and technical responsibility at the major subsystem level.Complete cost estimation for proposals.Act as the primary interface to customers and upper management.Provide guidance and mentorship to other team members.Direct and review the work of junior engineers, designers, and technicians.Participate in risk assessment and develop mitigation strategies for complex projects.

Essential Skills

Strong knowledge in Space mechanisms and Infrared payloads.Proficiency in design using Solidworks and Creo.Experience in mechanical design and GD&T.Minimum of 3 years of experience in 3D CAD modeling using industry-standard tools.Hands-on mechanical engineering experience, including integration and diagnosis of complex mechanisms and products.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience or a Graduate Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience is required.Ability to obtain and maintain DOD Security Clearance.Experience in design and testing for space environments, including temperature, vacuum, and radiation.

Work Environment

The position offers the opportunity to work on a large T3 government program. The work involves direct involvement in sub-vending through the person on the T3 program with L3Harris. This role provides a unique chance to work in a Small Business Enterprise (SBE) environment while contributing to significant government projects.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Morristown, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $150000.00 - $220000.00/yr.
