The Dupont Vespel® manufacturing site in Newark, DE is hiring a full-time mechanical design engineer to join the manufacturing technology team primarily focused on the design of new manufacturing tooling, production support equipment, and quality fixtures and gauges.
Responsibilities:
Compaction Tool Design
Read and understand CAD drawings from current customers
Create SolidWorks models and drawings of compaction tool assemblies us 2D and 3D geometry of customer drawings
Create SolidWorks Assembly files showing all key components as well as the important mechanical configurations
Lead tool design reviews where 3D and 2D is presented to and reviewed by operations, engineering, and quality functions
Select tool materials consistent with mechanical design principles and the desired tool life
Complete final mechanical design package
Obtain pricing from approved Pencader vendors and provide technical support during the fabrication of the tooling.
Ensure tools arrive as designed and function properly during installation and production
Production Equipment Design
Create mechanical designs and drawings for part grippers, part trays, part mandrels, cutting fixtures, inspection gauges, and inspection overlays
Support maintenance team as needed with equipment to aid in reducing routine and emergency downtime
Develop technical knowledge of the capabilities of all the direct form presses including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and multi-level.
Develop working knowledge of each vendor’s capabilities and engage in technical discussions to determine the optimal design for producing high-quality cost-effective parts
Develop basic knowledge of metallurgy of common tool steels to ensure proper selection of individual tool components
Understanding of equipment used in high precision machining including, wire EDM, sinker EDM, jig grinding, 5-axis CNC mill, kinematic mounting, heat treatment, polishing/lapping, and CMM inspection equipment.
Leverage existing manufacturing methods whenever possible
Provide engineering and design support for site capital projects
Understand and adhere to DuPont Mechanical Drafting standards
Communicate effectively with global members of manufacturing technology, operations and quality organizations
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D Model and 2D Drawing creation
Proficiency in ASME 14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
Basic understanding of mechanical design fundamentals including tolerance stack-up, proper sizing of locational fits, mechanical fatigue, machine dynamics
Familiarity with revision control and formal management of change (MOC) processes
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to contribute to a multi-functional global team
Detail oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and quality
Self-motivated with strong time-management skills to handle multiple tasks effectively.
