Manufacturing Dimensional Engineer

Dimensional Engineering / Quality Engineer – Job Description

This role is responsible for reviewing automotive parts to ensure all dimensional requirements meet fit, function, and quality standards within the body shop. The engineer will create and maintain standardized part‑inspection templates using dimensional analysis software, primarily leveraging GD&T and PolyWorks (training available). The position requires analyzing and validating build‑event parts, providing actionable feedback to manufacturing and product‑design teams, and conducting dimensional studies to resolve launch‑related issues for both new and existing programs.

A typical workday includes attending daily safety and quality meetings, inspecting assembly areas for potential quality concerns, reviewing previous‑shift defect data, scrap reports, and First Time Quality (FTQ) performance. The engineer investigates issues identified by operators or automated systems and collaborates with Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance, and Operators to drive resolution.

Responsibilities also include validating incoming parts against specifications, updating processes and documentation based on findings, and performing layered process audits to ensure compliance with Global Manufacturing System (GMS) standards. Quality performance updates must be documented and communicated to leadership, while actively supporting SPQRCE principles (Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, Environment).

This position is primarily focused on dimensional engineering within the body shop, with some collaboration with General Assembly partners. Approximately 80% of the role involves hands‑on analysis, with the remaining portion dedicated to cross‑functional communication, problem‑solving, and project leadership. The engineer will maintain existing dimensional control plans rather than developing new ones from scratch.

While no prior PFMEA experience specific to dimensional deviations is required, the organization provides training. The role involves limited people‑management responsibilities—mainly leading projects rather than supervising direct reports.

Must‑Have SkillsStrong understanding of GD&T principles and practical application in a manufacturing environmentAbility to perform hands‑on dimensional analysis using tools such as PolyWorks (experience preferred; training available)Demonstrated capability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve dimensional and quality issues on the production floorExperience reviewing defect data, scrap reports, and First Time Quality (FTQ) metrics to drive corrective actionsAbility to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and dimensional requirementsEffective cross‑functional collaboration skills, working closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance, Operators, and Design teamsStrong problem‑solving and root‑cause analysis skillsAbility to maintain and update dimensional control plans and quality documentationComfortable working in a fast‑paced plant environment and conducting layered process auditsClear, concise communication skills using cell phone, radio, and emailStrong teamwork orientation and the ability to lead small projects without direct supervisory responsibilitiesCommitment to SPQRCE principles (Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, Environment) and GMS standards
