GENERAL DUTIES
- Manages the patient safety program including ensuring compliance with state, local regulations and national patient safety goals.
- Consults and collaborates with the leadership with regard to new initiatives and/or significant changes in policies.
- Maintains the patient safety program written plan, proposes amendments in accordance with regulatory requirements and the needs of the organization and obtains input from all levels from multiple levels of the organization.
- Ensures the patient safety plan and other associated policies are reviewed, approved by appropriate Committees and Board of Directors at defined intervals.Patient Safety:
- Oversees, maintains and supports mechanisms and processes for reporting and addressing patient safety events.
- Oversees daily surveillance of reported errors and events. Investigates and addresses patient safety issues as indicated.
- Guides managers/appropriate staff in responding to patient safety issues as necessary.Patient Safety Analysis:
- Conducts preliminary investigations of unanticipated or adverse patient safety events or other related events and reports findings to the leaders and appropriate team members.
- Facilitates root cause analyses (RCAs) utilizing organizational tools, processes and participates and assists in the coordination of root cause analysis (RCA) teams.
- Leads and/or coordinates the annual Failure Mode Analysis (FMEA) including identifying an appropriate topic, FMEA Team coordination, preparation of documents and reports as required.Facilitate Change:
Recommends, facilitates and implements change within the organization to improve safety, based on identified risks. Serves as resource to departments on issues of patient safety.Communication, Education and Budget:
- Designs and implements educational presentations that facilitate understanding and implementation of patient safety standards. - Works with the leader(s) in the development and maintenance of an internal hospital communication system for patient safety alerts.
- Develops an annual patient safety education plan for the organization.
- Assists the leaders in finalizing the departmental budget.
