Maintenance Manager
Supervise the branch maintenance program in an efficient, safe manner. Supervise and coordinate the activities of the employees engaged in servicing and repairing equipment and vehicles while providing hands-on maintenance to assist the shop employees with the completion of their daily tasks

Position Overview

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance operations at the branch, ensuring the safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance of the fleet and facilities. This role provides leadership to maintenance personnel while partnering closely with Operations to maximize equipment uptime, control costs, and maintain a safe, efficient shop environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Team Management

Lead, supervise, and develop all maintenance department employees through effective planning, scheduling, coaching, and performance management

Recruit, interview, hire, train, evaluate, and discipline maintenance personnel as needed

Schedule and lead safety meetings, documenting attendance and ensuring adherence to all safety protocols

Maintenance & Fleet Oversight

Oversee all vehicle and equipment maintenance activities, ensuring quality, safety, and compliance

Establish, manage, and enforce a comprehensive preventative maintenance program

Ensure follow-up and quality control on all completed repairs

Review daily work orders and Vehicle Condition Reports (VCRs)

Safety & Compliance

Ensure all maintenance work and shop facilities meet GFL Environmental, DOT, and applicable federal, state, and local safety standards

Maintain all required inspection, maintenance, and safety records

Ensure Safety Lane operations are functioning efficiently and effectively

Operations & Coordination

Partner with Operations leadership to coordinate equipment downtime for inspections, service, and repairs

Ensure fleet availability aligns with operational needs

Budgeting, Inventory & Reporting

Manage inventory of parts, tools, and supplies in a cost-effective manner

Authorize purchases and track parts and labor costs using appropriate G/L codes

Track fuel usage, manage fuel orders, and prepare monthly fuel reporting

Run inventory and parts cost reports and enter adjustments as required

Submit required monthly reports to the Area Controller

Facility Oversight

Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of the shop facility and surrounding grounds

Ensure service trucks and support vehicles are properly maintained and presentable

Perform additional duties as assigned

Ensure full compliance with all company policies and applicable regulations

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required

DOT certification for air brake inspection and adjustment and Annual Vehicle Inspection certification

Ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of hire

Prior supervisory or management experience in a maintenance or shop environment preferred

Full set of personal hand tools required

Working knowledge of welding, compactor repair, air brake systems, and vehicle inspections

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with TMW, I-Pak, and JD Edwards preferred

Understanding of parts, labor, and G/L cost allocation

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, manuals, and technical documentation

Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills

Knowledge of budgeting and cost-control processes

Physical & Working Conditions

Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, and use hands and fingers

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs regularly, 50 lbs frequently, and up to 100 lbs occasionally

Visual acuity including close vision, distance vision, and depth perception

Moderate to loud noise environment

Exposure to weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, chemicals, and airborne particles

Occasional work in elevated or precarious locations
