Lead Systems Programmer/ Senior Mainframe Systems Engineer
CTG is seeking to fill a Lead Systems Programmer / Senior Mainframe Systems Engineer position for our client. Location: Raleigh, NC Duration: Ongoing Contract Duties: Coordinate and lead complex system changes, upgrades, and configuration activities across supported mainframe platforms. Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for one or more mainframe subsystems (e.g., z/OS, CICS, DB2, DASD, networking, or third-party tools). Provide technical leadership, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies for system changes and production stability. Mentor junior and mid-level systems programmers; provide guidance on technical tasks, troubleshooting, and incident response. Lead resolution of high-priority incidents, perform root cause analysis, and deliver post-incident documentation. Collaborate with enterprise and infrastructure architects to ensure subsystem configurations align with architectural standards and best practices. Develop, standardize, and maintain operational runbooks, configuration baselines, and audit-ready documentation. Support process improvement initiatives, including automation and operational efficiency efforts. Participate in vendor coordination and support activities as needed. Skills: Advanced knowledge of IBM mainframe environments, including z/OS and related subsystems. Strong expertise in one or more of the following: CICS, DB2, DASD/storage management, mainframe networking, system performance, or third-party mainframe tools. Proven ability to plan and execute complex system changes with minimal production risk. Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and incident management skills. Experience with system automation, scripting, and operational efficiency improvements. Knowledge of change management, configuration control, and compliance/audit requirements. Strong leadership, mentoring, and cross-team collaboration capabilities. Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in one or more mainframe systems support areas (e.g., CICS, DB2, DASD, Network, z/OS, third-party tools). Experience leading complex migrations, upgrades, or platform modernization efforts. Experience working with vendors and managing enterprise-level system initiatives preferred. Demonstrated experience mentoring technical staff and leading incident response activities. Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in Information Technology or a related field preferred. Work Environment & Physical Requirements: Position operates in a professional office environment or hybrid/remote setting. Ability to remain in a stationary position (seated or standing) for extended periods while working on a computer. Ability to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and through collaboration tools. Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group are required.
