Mercer’s GSD Health Actuarial team is seeking candidate for Lead Specialist – Actuarial role(s) to support client engagements focused on U.S. employers’ healthcare benefits strategy and financials. This is a hands-on role working with U.S. Consulting & Actuarial teams to deliver high-quality analysis and client materials. The successful candidate will be an individual contributor developing expertise by supporting client deliverables such as underwriting, financial projections, carrier selection analysis, plan design optimization, and employee contribution setting, assisting with reserving analyses, and evaluating well-being initiatives and other programs for their cost and outcome impacts.
We will count on you for:
Contribute to client deliverables including underwriting and financial projections, carrier selection analysis, plan design changes and optimization, and employee contribution setting.
Estimate incurred but not paid (IBNP) claims and support reserving analyses.
Analyze and evaluate well-being initiatives and other programs for cost and outcome impacts.
Build and maintain relationships with U.S. consulting teams, internal subject-matter experts, and relevant stakeholders.
Support project management activities: scope tasks, manage deadlines, prioritize competing workstreams, and ensure timely delivery of accurate outputs.
Prepare clear, client-ready materials (models, slide decks, and reports) and communicate technical findings to non-technical audiences.
Provide guidance or direction to junior analysts and contribute to team knowledge sharing and training (including training your replacement, when required).
Participate in occasional client-facing activities and partner with senior staff on presentations and financial client contacts.
What you need to have:
Minimum 12 months experience as Senior Specialist (C2) / Lead Specialist (D1)
Should have at least “On-Track” or equivalent rating in last appraisal.
Should not be under any Performance Counselling Plan or had any official disciplinary action within the last 3 months.
Should not have applied for any other IJP in the last 3 months
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpretation skills with attention to numerical accuracy.
Practical knowledge of health & benefits (H&B) domain preferred—experience with employer-sponsored healthcare in the U.S. is an advantage.
Prior actuarial consulting experience in healthcare or experience independently managing multiple complex projects.
Experience serving as a financial client contact or leading client presentations.
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a demanding environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
Solid project management skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Advanced proficiency with MS Excel; comfortable preparing PowerPoint deliverables and client reports.
Any graduate degree – preferably in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, Finance, or another quantitatively rigorous discipline.
* Must have passed two exams from CS and CM exam series from IAI or IFoA - and preferably 5+ actuarial exams passed, or equivalent progress toward actuarial qualification from other institutes.
