Lead Software Engineer — AI Gateway & Agentic AI

**About this role:**
Wells Fargo is seeking a Lead Engineer — AI Gateway & Agentic AI within Digital Technology's AI Capability Engineering organization. In this role, you will drive the evolution of our GenAI platform by leading the design and operation of the AI Gateway and the canonical LLM API layer.
You will build and maintain OpenAI‑compatible endpoints (e.g., /chatcompletion, embeddings, responses, interactions), operate the hybrid AI Gateway with strong OAuth/mTLS security, and advance our Tachyon SDK ecosystem—both the Client SDK and Agent Weaver Kit (TAWK) for LangGraph/ADK—ensuring traceability and evaluation support throughout.
Key responsibilities include owning API versioning, deprecation strategy, rate limiting, and developer onboarding, integrating observability and evaluation frameworks, enabling MCP servers and agentic AI workflows, and delivering UI tooling that improves developer and operational productivity. You will ensure secure, reliable access to multi‑model AI backends across both on‑prem and cloud environments.
**In this role, you will:**
+ Lead complex technology initiatives including those that are companywide with broad impact
+ Act as a key participant in developing standards and companywide best practices for engineering complex and large scale technology solutions for technology engineering disciplines
+ Design, code, test, debug, and document for projects and programs
+ Review and analyze complex, large-scale technology solutions for tactical and strategic business objectives, enterprise technological environment, and technical challenges that require in-depth evaluation of multiple factors, including intangibles or unprecedented technical factors
+ Make decisions in developing standard and companywide best practices for engineering and technology solutions requiring understanding of industry best practices and new technologies, influencing and leading technology team to meet deliverables and drive new initiatives
+ Collaborate and consult with key technical experts, senior technology team, and external industry groups to resolve complex technical issues and achieve goals
+ Lead projects, teams, or serve as a peer mentor
**Required Qualifications:**
+ 5+ years of Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
**Desired Qualifications:**
+ 2+ years of experience in GenAI engineering
+ 1+ years of experience with LLM API exposure, including AI Gateway, OAuth2/mTLS, rate limits/quotas, OpenAPI/SDKs, SLAs, versioning/deprecation, and OpenAI-compatible API design (Responses, Interactions, chat/generate, search, ingest, embeddings)
+ 1+ years of experience with AI gateways such as KONG, Portkey, Apigee, SSE/streaming operations, quota/rate-limit configuration, and capacity and change-window planning
+ 1+ years of experience with SDKs and frameworks, including Gen AI Client, Agent Weaver Kit/SDK, LangGraph/ADK integration, trace/eval hooks, and registry updates
+ 1+ years of experience building and supporting MCP servers, tool adapters, and agent workflows, including agent identity/permissions and governance metadata
+ 1+ years of experience with telemetry and evaluations, including trace propagation, platform strategy, SLO dashboards, alerting, and retention/export workflows
+ 1+ years of experience with AuthN/Z, including OAuth2 (client and user context), mTLS, token binding, eliminating key sharing, and enforcing per-user access via gateway
+ 5+ years of experience building modern web UI for developer/ops workflows, including dashboards, wizards, and prompt/eval tooling with strong testing and accessibility practices
+ 2+ years of experience in GenAI engineering, including prompt engineering and evaluation harnesses, understanding of LLMs/SLMs, common tuning methods, and per-model performance considerations
+ 5+ years of experience with Python programming
+ Experience with Java programming
+ Experience with devin/GitHub Copilot for productivity

**Pay Range**
Reflected is the base pay range offered for this position. Pay may vary depending on factors including but not limited to demonstrated examples of prior performance, skills, experience, or work location. Employees may also be eligible for incentive opportunities.
$119,000.00 - $224,000.00
