Job Title: Lead Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Birmingham, AL | Hybrid (3 days in office, 2 remote)

Compensation: $120,000–$185,000 base, plus comprehensive benefits. Relocation considered.

The Opportunity
We’re seeking a seasoned Geotechnical Team Lead (15+ years) who thrives as a seller‑doer: you’ll lead people and projects (75% delivery) while developing work with existing clients (20–25% BD). You’ll mentor a growing team, and collaborate across the South Region. You will provide technical support and leadership for multi-phase infrastructure projects across both public and private sectors. The role encompasses due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, and construction management. You will guide project managers and managers, ensuring documentation and recommendations reflect risk management, innovation, and future-ready solutions.
Responsibilities
Lead geotechnical delivery across concept, preliminary/final design, procurement support, and construction services.Plan and interpret subsurface investigations, evaluating foundations, settlement, lateral earth pressures, groundwater/seepage, slope stability, and geological hazards.Oversee geotechnical calculations, models, and reports while mentoring work in GeoSlope and related tools.Develop construction plans/specifications, cost estimates, safety/phasing plans, coordinating with multi-discipline teams and subcontractors.Manage scope, schedule, and financials, leading risk/mitigation, QA/QC, and change management.Engage with existing clients for proposals, scoping, presentations, and relationship stewardship.Mentor and coach engineers, build standards/checklists, and support collaboration with other regional offices.Essential Skills
Bachelor’s in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering; Master’s preferred.Active PE license; multi-state licensure is a plus.15+ years in geotechnical consulting with proven project management and team leadership.Seller-doer experience with existing clients (20–25% business development).Advanced proficiency with GeoSlope and ability to mentor others.Strong knowledge of geotechnical design, construction methods, permitting, and QA/QC.Excellent communication skills for guiding clients, project managers, and multi-discipline teams.Familiarity with Alabama market dynamics, including public/private infrastructure and industrial/utilities.Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with ALDOT, municipal utility, or industrial sites without client conflicts.Regional teaming across multiple offices.Proposal leadership and client account support.Proficiency with technical writing and various design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS.Work Environment
The role is based in Birmingham, AL, with a hybrid work model allowing for three days in the office and two remote. The work involves occasional travel, including day trips and periodic overnight stays, rarely extending up to one week. The role offers flexibility and a collaborative environment, using GeoSlope software suite for geotechnical analysis. It involves a mix of business development and project leadership, contributing to broader regional collaboration without heavy travel commitments.
