The Indo-Pacific Regional Operations Department (N554) works with the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) and the Military Service Components on-island to inform warfighter requirements and Concepts of Operation (CONOPS), and provides Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) systems acquisition, engineering, and integration support to the Department of Defense (DOD) and U.S. Allies in the Pacific Theater.
N554 is a dynamic and forward leaning organization that provides direct connections to warfighters. These direct connections allow staff to monitor and participate in current operations and exercises. A key output of this access is the ability to inform technology innovation and capability analysis with operational domain expertise. N554 operational depth and warfighter access has generated considerable expertise in the development and analysis of CONOPS, mission threads, use cases, and operational requirements. The Department establishes links between DoD sponsors and Coalition Partner development activities. N554 is on the cutting edge of current operations and is a major thought leader in force modernization.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Indo-Pacific Regional Operations Department (N554) is seeking to fill a Lead Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer position supporting MITRE’s project with USINDOPACOM in Honolulu, Hawaii. MITRE aims to deliver quantifiable mission value and operational impact to the warfighter – primarily by accelerating technical innovation of new ideas and solutions to emerging operational problems. We collaborate with acquisition stakeholders, technology innovators, operational analysts, and other mission partners to help accelerate the delivery of needed capabilities to operational and tactical level warfighters across the naval, joint, and combined force.
This Lead AI Engineer position will lead and support MITRE efforts to rapidly tailor and integrate industry AI and machine learning (AI/ML) capabilities and tools across INDOPACOM directorates, the Chief Data Office (CDO), and theater service components. While experience or expertise across the AI domain is very beneficial, the focus for this position is on driving integration, adoption, and training for existing capabilities. Thus, successful candidates will have demonstratable experience working directly with Department of Defense (DoD) or other US Government departments/agencies integrating data and/or AI/ML solutions.
Specific responsibilities include:
Working across Industry and Headquarters (HQ) INDOPACOM directorates to identify, assess, prioritize and implement warfighting AI/ML efforts and for the HeadquartersDeveloping and experimenting with novel applications of AI to enhance USINDOPACOM operations, activities, and investments (OAIs)Facilitating the integration of AI/ML solutions into Headquarters HQ INDOPACOM operationsCoordinating across HQ INDOPACOM directorates and Special Staff to ensure AI/ML efforts and strategic engagements across the Command are aligned and avoiding duplication of effortPartnering with DoD service providers to identify and develop a regional infrastructure framework of offerings that support scale, resilience, and prioritized operational/tactical use casesDeveloping staff and leadership curriculums comprised of industry best offerings for required AI/ML skillsetsBasic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a B.S degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experienceStrong Familiarity with DoD military missionsStrong familiarity with DoD message standardsPrior experience working day-to-day in government-controlled DoD spacesDemonstratable experience building, deploying, implementing and/or integrating AI or data applications, tools, and technologiesPrior experience with US Department of Defense systems of systems integrationDeep understanding and prior experience with cross domain solutionsPrior experience with Agentic AI as it applies to military tasksEffective and influential oral communications skillsStrong written and oral communications skillsActive Top-Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCIU.S. Citizenship requiredThis position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.Preferred Qualifications:

As part of the Hawaii Rotation Program, the candidate selected for this position will receive an annual incentive as a lump sum payment each year for 3 years. This rotation program can be extended for a maximum of 5 years.
