Job Overview

The Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview Northland Medical Center in Princeton, MN is looking to fill one (1) 0.6 FTE (rotating weekend and holiday) Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) position. This position is benefit eligible, working 8-hour shifts, primarily overnight shifts and acting as backup for evening shifts. This LCT will provide patient care while working overnight shifts every 4th weekend (Saturday and Sunday), weekday night shifts, and occasional weekday evening shifts. Overnight shifts are from 9:00pm to 05:30am. Evening shifts are from 12:30pm to 9:00pm. Training for this position will be full–time Monday–Friday for at least four (4) weeks. 

 

Working with diverse populations within a healthcare environment, the Lab Care Technician (LCT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with M Health Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families, and co-workers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection at various M Health Fairview or outreach locations, as well as provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work; scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone, the LCT's attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services. Working as an individual or team member, the LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving M Health Fairview's goals.

Responsibilities

Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.Collects biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.Demonstrates proficiency with point of care testing and/or waived testing.May perform EKG’s.May train others in phlebotomy skills.Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing including properly identified.Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance.Monitors inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.Mentors and teaches students.Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.Prioritizes assigned work.Transports blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.Information ProcessingAccurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.Schedules tests/procedures.Provides results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.Acquires additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area.Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program.Maintains a safe work environment.Adheres to safety protocols.Follows infection control guidelines.Responds appropriately to emergent situations.

Required Qualifications

Minimum age (18 years)Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program orCompletion of three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience orEnrollment in MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course.Demonstrate competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.Demonstrate ability to exercise independent judgment.Demonstrate manual dexterity.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
