Job Specific Details:

 

Point of Care is responsible for laboratory testing performed in departments by non-laboratorians (medical assistants, nurses, perfusionists, educators, etc.).  Approximately 85% of time will be spent interacting with these groups by developing and implementing point of care testing.  Excellent leadership, customer service skills, professionalism, and adaptability are desirable.Requires computer access to the Emory Healthcare network, telephone capabilities, and in state travel to Emory locations.Tasks include (but are not limited to):  Oversee evaluation and validation of new testing method requestsOversee the development and implementation of procedures for lab related processesCoordinate the purchase of new supplies or equipment and the validation of new or replaced/repaired instrumentsOrder and maintain supplies and equipmentInstall instruments and troubleshoot instrument or connectivity issuesPerform comparison and correlation testing of instrumentsOversight of reporting for validations, comparisons and correlationsAssisting personnel with proficiency testing process including review and corrective action on proficiency test errorsMaintain accurate records using various laboratory databases, troubleshoot problems related to laboratory issues including supply distribution, test ordering, specimen integrity, result reporting, compliance, and billingInvestigation and reporting of erroneous results (patient, proficiency, comparison, etc.) and processing result and chart correction requestsTraining non-laboratory and Point of Care staff on Point of Care testing such as glucose, creatinine, INR, blood gas testing, and others and maintaining competencies in the Point of Care DatabaseInteract as liaison with Point of Care program participants, facilitate and encourage questions, and discuss and serve as a resource by providing information through newsletters, formal meetings, telephone contact, etc.Organize the development of training materials and logistics and the preparation of presentations including monthly in-service education as appropriateOversee the accreditation requirements including preparing and submitting CLIA applications for new and existing sitesMaintaining survey readiness and preparedness for various regulatory agencies and managing survey processes as requiredCollect, organize, and analyze data and generate and provide accurate and complete reports including monthly quality assurance reports and compliance reports for management and/or regulatory agenciesOversight of program implementation and compliance monitoring according to policies and procedures that meet federal and state regulations and accreditation standards
o Perform rounding, present findings, and develop and monitor action plans for clinical sites as assignedSubmit compliance reports and documentation of issues and resolutionsDevelop goals and objectives for specific areas of responsibility and correlate goals with the healthcare system strategic goalsParticipate in professional development activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developmentsCoordinate resolution with appropriate lab section in a timely mannerMeet with administration, staff, faculty and other departmentsPerform other duties as required
Description Develops, tests, and establishes new laboratory procedures.Coordinates their implementation and evaluation.Identifies, troubleshoots, and solves complex problems.Makes internal and external presentations regarding advanced laboratory topics. Troubleshoots instrument and equipment malfunctions.Orders and maintains supplies and equipment for developmental testing.Field tests and evaluates reagents and equipment for use in the laboratory; recommends the purchase of new equipment or supplies.Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development.Attends educational in-services as appropriate.Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.Assists other laboratory supervisory personnel in developing and monitoring the quality of laboratory procedures to ensure results remain within established control levels.Teaches theory and clinical procedures to Medical Technology students, graduate students, and pathology residents.Develops and conducts in-service training and continuing education programs for technologists.Determines the need for, develops, evaluates, and implements new or modified procedures or techniques to provide improved patient care.Performs advanced and routine procedures as required.Develops teaching protocols for specialized testing.Researches documents and journals for developments in the field.Performs related responsibilities as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical lab science or a chemical, physical or biological science.Other bachelor's degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school of medical technology or if science and math coursework meet requirement of certifying agency.Education Exception: Bachelor's degree may be waived for a medical technologist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelor's degree requirement by ASCP and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services.Bachelor's degree may be waived for histotechnologists with HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP).Two years required with five years of related laboratory experience preferred.Positions in this classification may require certification in a particular laboratory specialty.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
