The Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in facilitating the testing process by performing essential non-technical procedures. This position involves preparing supplies, handling samples, organizing workflow, and maintaining instruments to ensure laboratory accuracy and efficiency.
ResponsibilitiesHandle serum, whole blood, and plasma samples safely and accurately.Manage the proper disposal of radioactive and biohazard waste in accordance with safety protocols.Perform sample management tasks, including volumization, organizing samples into load lists, and labeling/numbering specimen tubes.Assist with locating missing samples and retrieving specimens from freezer storage.Complete daily and weekly preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments.Adhere to standard operating procedures and safety requirements as set by regulatory agencies.Document all quality assurance activities, including preventive maintenance logs, instrument function checks, troubleshooting steps, and quality control measures.Follow additional job-related instructions and perform other duties as assigned by department leadership.Essential SkillsHigh School Diploma or equivalent.Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.Flexibility to work overtime as needed.Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.Must pass a standardized color blindness test.Basic computer knowledge and data entry skills.Additional Skills & QualificationsPrevious medical/lab or production experience is preferred.Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies in specimen information or labeling.Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory environment with strict turnaround times.Basic proficiency with laboratory information systems and ability to learn new software quickly.Effective communication skills for collaborating with technologists, supervisors, and other lab staff.Ability to prioritize tasks and manage workflow during peak specimen intake periods.Familiarity with biosafety practices and proper handling of potentially infectious materials.Solid problem-solving skills to assist with resolving specimen issues, instrument flags, or workflow bottlenecks.Work EnvironmentThis role involves regular exposure to blood-borne pathogens, radioactive materials, and walk-in freezer environments. The position requires frequent use of hands and fingers, standing, sitting, grasping, lifting, pushing, and pulling. The schedule is Tuesday–Saturday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM, with flexibility for overtime as needed.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
