Summary:
Consolidated Electrical Distributors, Inc. (CED) is one of the largest electrical solutions distributors and product suppliers in the country, and we are seeking a network engineer for CED's data center operations. Located in Irving TX, the IT Operations team is responsible for CED's data centers and IT infrastructure supporting our 700+ locations across the country as well as the CED Service Center. The successful candidate will have experience providing support for and maintaining data center IT infrastructure and Microsoft technologies. CED is focused on finding the best talent as we continue to grow and build upon the success that was started in 1957.
The position will work with CED management, system engineers, software development groups, the IT help desk, and IT project managers to support and maintain these IT systems and networks.
Reports to: IT Operations Manager
Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
· 5+ years of experience in various network engineering and operations disciplines, including critical production environments, LAN administration, firewall administration, monitoring and alerting systems, hardware and software refresh, and data center operations.
· Fundamental experience administering Windows servers, Active Directory, VMware, Storage systems, and backup solutions.
· Established experience and a passion for providing exceptional customer service.
· Confidence interacting with a wide range of people, from clerical staff, operations, developers, senior management, and vendors.
· Proven troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
· Must possess the ability to work under pressure.
· Ability to organize multiple work tasks and prioritize them to meet specific deadlines.
· Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
· Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
· Competence in operating a personal computer and external computer peripherals.
· Proficiency to read, write, and communicate orally the English language, especially I.T. technical terms and concepts.
· Physical qualifications required to perform the job function: ability to lift 25 lbs., climb stairs, sit for long periods of time.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Excellent understanding of networking concepts with experience in local and wide area network design, administration, and troubleshooting.
· Experience designing and implementing virtualized networks for private and hybrid clouds, particularly with VMware, Azure and AWS.
· Experience managing enterprise Fortinet firewalls including policy design, NAT, VPN, segmentation, IPS/IDS concepts, and change control
· Demonstrated best practices in structured cabling, labeling standards, patch panel/IDF/MDF organization, fiber/copper handling, rack layouts, and maintaining accurate port-to-jack and port-to-switch mappings
· Experience running refresh cycles (EoL/EoS planning), maintaining golden configurations, performing firmware upgrades safely (maintenance windows, rollback planning), and tracking inventory/spares/warranties.
· Proficiency with SolarWinds, Wireshark, and other network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
· Experience building and maintaining micro-segmentation strategies and solutions for endpoints on the network.
· Ability to produce and maintain high-quality network diagrams (logical/physical), IPAM accuracy, firewall rule documentation, runbooks, and standardized operating procedures for handoffs and audits.
· Familiarity with automation tools/approaches (PowerShell, Python, Ansible, APIs, templating) to standardize configs, validate compliance, accelerate provisioning, and reduce human error—without sacrificing governance.
· Comfortable owning workstreams end-to-end: requirements gathering, scope definition, schedules, risk/issue tracking, stakeholder updates, change management/CAB, and post-implementation validation and lessons learned.
· Strong working knowledge of IT concepts such as identity management, two-factor authentication, host-based security, and security event management and zero-trust network architecture.
· Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products as required.
· Technical writing and verbal communication skills to develop and maintain documentation, and to communicate effectively with fellow team members, management, and non-engineering support staff in both technical and user-friendly language.
· Experience with utilizing support ticketing systems for ticket management and change requests.
· Key experience advantages: Fortinet, Cisco, Dell, Illumio, SolarWinds, Windows Server, VMWare, AWS, Azure.
Working Conditions:
· Office environment, with minimal travel required.
· Requires occasional after-hours and weekend work.
· Requires on-call rotation and availability for after-hours emergencies.

Essential Job Functions:
· Collaborate with other Engineering and Operations staff to engineer network infrastructure solutions to comply with IT security and configuration standards.
· Provision network hardware and configure systems to fulfill the needs of multiple departments while conforming to IT security and configuration standards.
· Ensure smooth and reliable operation of data center and cloud networks and device interconnectivity.
· Assist in the daily administration and ongoing maintenance of software and hardware on all data center systems and devices.
· Provide 2nd and 3rd level support by responding to incidents and requests in a timely manner, providing regular status updates, and tracking changes using approved software.
· Develop, execute, and maintain network standards and configurations.
· Design and execute business continuity strategies, maintain system backups, and ensure that all systems are meeting defined SLAs.
· Conduct research on network technologies and products to justify recommendations and to support budgeting and purchasing efforts.
· Assist senior Engineers and other IT managers to develop, update, and document IT infrastructure and operational policies and standards. Develop and maintain system runbooks, configuration-specific documentation, and procedural guides for applicable systems.
