The Program
At Novo Nordisk, interns will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced industry professionals and gain valuable, hands-on, full-time work experience. For ten working weeks, interns will be immersed in the environment of a global pharmaceutical company and contribute to the line of business by providing sustainable and meaningful project work. Our internship program also includes instructor led trainings, a leadership engagement series, and a guided mentorship program to offer professional and personal development.
Program Start: June 1st, 2026
Program End: August 14th, 2026
Scope of Position
The Process Engineer intern will lead a critical sustainability initiative to establish a closed-loop acetonitrile recycling process for reducing our platform process’s carbon footprint. Due to acetonitrile being the primary carbon footprint contributor in oligonucleotide synthesis, this work is essential to decoupling pipeline progression from environmental impact. The intern will first utilize Dynochem to develop thermodynamic models and simulate multi-component distillation, defining the critical operating parameters and ranges necessary for optimal solvent recovery and purity. Following the modeling phase, the intern will execute laboratory-scale distillation runs to validate the Dynochem simulations and produce recycled solvent batches. Solvent composition will be determined with GC. This hands-on work includes operating reactors and troubleshooting deviations to ensure the process is robust for manufacturing scale-up. Finally, the intern will perform 3-4 iterative synthesis cycles with the recycled acetonitrile used for non-critical steps. By using HPLC and MS to track trace impurity growth and product quality across these iterations, the intern will determine feasibility of a circular solvent system without compromising medication safety or efficacy.
