The University of Virginia's College at Wise, a division of The University of Virginia, located in Wise, Virginia, invites applications for a tenure-track Faculty position in Library Media and Education. This position is a full-time, 9-month commitment at an Instructor or Assistant Professor level with the potential for summer teaching.
This is a hybrid position with approximately 70% online instruction and required on-campus presence approximately once per week. The role focuses primarily on library media education while also including the teaching of general education courses as needed.
Duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on content, technology, and pedagogy pertaining to library media and school librarianship, as well as general education courses within the Department of Education as assigned. The successful candidate will serve on departmental and college committees while advising and mentoring students in the Library Media endorsement program and the Library Media concentration Master of Education degree. Additional responsibilities include conducting and publishing scholarly research, presenting at professional conferences, engaging in professional service, and assisting with assessment, accreditation, and licensure. The candidate will collaborate with P-12 school partners and demonstrate expertise in integrating instructional technology into library media practice. Time permitting, this position may supervise Library Media interns within P-12 schools.
The UVA Wise Library Media Endorsement Program has been an important part of the Education Department for more than 20 years and continues to grow through positive word-of-mouth and recommendations from program completers and the Virginia Department of Education. This primarily online program attracts students from across the Commonwealth, with nearly 70 students currently enrolled annually. The VDOE-approved program matches competencies set forth by the Virginia Department of Education and includes both an add-on endorsement and a Library Media concentration within the Master of Education degree.
Successful candidates must possess excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability for innovative teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as experience in a school library setting. Candidates must have a doctoral degree in an education field. Preferred qualifications include experience with the Virginia Standards of Learning, P-12 school library teaching experience, scholarly publication record or research potential, professional service in school librarianship, online/hybrid course delivery experience, and a commitment to improving teacher preparation.
