What you’ll do (Top responsibilities)Lead the IDC Retail Technology portfolio (In‑Club + Merchandising).Own strategy and execution for the In‑Club and Merchandising technology portfolio anchored in IDC, including capabilities such as receiving and backroom operations, inventory management, and omni‑channel services, as well as item master data, vendor management, pricing and promotions, merchandising planning, replenishment, and inventory records.Build scalable, AI‑enabled platforms for club operations and merchandising.
Guide teams to design and deliver robust, secure, and highly available platforms spanning mobile apps, cloud‑native services, data platforms, and AI/ML capabilities that support in‑club workflows, omni‑fulfillment, and merchandising decisioning at Sam’s Club scale.Serve as site leader and culture champion for IDC Retail Technologies.
Act as the senior-most leader for these domains in Bangalore—setting vision and operating rhythms; attracting, developing, and retaining top engineering and data science talent; and fostering a culture of learning, ownership, and inclusion that reflects Walmart values.Bridge U.S. and India teams to deliver business outcomes.
Partner closely with U.S.-based product, engineering, merchandising, operations, finance, and data science leaders to translate strategy and business problems into clear roadmaps, measurable outcomes, and execution plans; ensure effective ways‑of‑working across time zones and locations.Drive engineering excellence and platform reliability.
Establish and enforce standards for software architecture, data quality, observability, security, and cost efficiency. Ensure systems meet demanding non‑functional requirements including scalability, performance, and reliability for mission‑critical Club and merchandising operations.Manage cross‑domain portfolio, governance, and investment.
Own portfolio planning and prioritization across multiple product areas, balancing foundational platform work with club‑facing capabilities. Manage budgets and vendor relationships, ensure compliance and risk management, and continuously optimize investments for long‑term value.Grow and mentor a strong leadership bench.
Lead and develop a team of Directors, Senior Managers, Principal/Distinguished Engineers, and Data Science leaders. Provide coaching, feedback, and career development to scale leadership capacity and enable empowered, autonomous teams.What you’ll bring (Top qualifications)
Deep retail and merchandising domain expertise.
Extensive experience with technologies that support physical retail or wholesale clubs, such as Club operations, POS and payments, inventory and replenishment, receiving and claims, member services/omni‑channel services, item master and catalog, vendor management, pricing and promotions, and merchandising analytics.
Proven large‑scale engineering leadership.
15+ years of experience in software engineering, with 8+ years leading multi‑layer organizations (through Directors and Sr. Managers) delivering mission‑critical systems. Demonstrated success running complex, multi‑product portfolios and platform roadmaps in a global environment.
Strong technical foundation across modern architectures and data/AI.
Hands‑on familiarity with cloud‑native, distributed systems; microservices and APIs; enterprise data platforms; and the practical application of AI/ML (including computer vision and data science) in production systems. Able to provide high‑level architectural guidance and technical oversight.
Product‑driven, metrics‑oriented mindset.
Track record of partnering with Product and Business leaders to shape strategy, define success metrics, and execute against clear outcome‑based roadmaps. Comfortable using data to prioritize, experiment, and iterate quickly while managing risk for mission‑critical operations.
Exceptional people and stakeholder leadership.
Proven ability to attract, develop, and retain senior engineering leaders; build inclusive, high‑performing cultures; and influence senior executives and cross‑functional stakeholders across engineering, product, operations, and merchandising.
Global collaboration and communication skills.
Experience leading distributed teams and collaborating across geographies and time zones. Able to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, business‑relevant way to senior leaders and non‑technical stakeholders.
15+ years of experience in software engineering or related technical fields, including at least 8 years managing managers (Director‑level or equivalent) in high‑scale product or platform organizations.
Experience building and operating technology for retail, ecommerce, or other large‑scale transactional and inventory‑intensive businesses.
Demonstrated experience leading cross‑functional programs and portfolios that span multiple domains and platforms.Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
Experience in wholesale club, big‑box retail, or grocery environments.
Background in AI/ML, data science, or computer vision applications in Club or merchandising contexts.
Prior experience establishing or scaling a technology center/COE in India or another global location.
