The Hybrid Infrastructure Platform team within Genus’ global Technology and Architecture organization is looking for a Hybrid Infrastructure Engineer. This remote role focuses on designing, building and operating hybrid infrastructure across Genus’ Azure estate and on‑premises VMware virtual‑infrastructure estate. The successful candidate will ensure that core infrastructure platforms are secure, resilient and scalable while supporting Genus’ mission of sustainable animal genetics
You Will Work with architecture and development teams to design secure and reliable infrastructure across Azure and on‑premises datacentres. Responsibilities include designing and deploying Azure services (virtual machines, storage, networking), developing Infrastructure‑as‑Code templates (ARM/Terraform), and implementing VMware solutions such as vSphere, vCenter and ESXi.Architect, deploy and optimize Genus’ virtualized environment using vSphere, vCenter and ESXi, ensuring high availability and disaster‑recovery capabilities. Implement best practices for capacity planning, resource allocation and performance tuning, and troubleshoot virtualization performance issues.Design, deploy and manage cloud applications using Azure services. Automate provisioning using Infrastructure‑as‑Code templates and scripting (ARM templates, Terraform, PowerShell or Python). Monitor and optimize Azure resources for performance and cost efficiency. Ensure compliance with security best practices and regulatory standards.Act as a project‑focused engineer, delivering on‑prem, hybrid and cloud projects. Install, configure, troubleshoot, upgrade and support cloud and on‑prem technology solutions, maintaining strong client and internal communications throughout the project lifecycle. Provide documentation and knowledge transfer to peers and users. Implement and support backup solutions (e.g., Veeam) and ensure that both Azure and VMware environments meet disaster‑recovery and business‑continuity requirements. Configure and manage Azure Backup and Disaster Recovery services and ensure on‑prem backup strategies align with cloud recovery objectives.Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including development, security and operations—to gather requirements, provide technical guidance and integrate hybrid infrastructure solutions. Communicate progress to leadership and provide training and support to colleagues and end users.Identify opportunities for automation and operational efficiency. Develop scripts and processes to automate repetitive tasks and infrastructure deployments. Implement monitoring, logging and alerting best practices to ensure reliability and proactive problem detection.Build comprehensive observability across Genus’ hybrid infrastructure using monitoring tools such as SolarWinds. Discover, map and monitor routers, switches, servers and firewalls to understand network and system performance. Track latency, jitter and packet‑loss metrics to detect issues early, reduce downtime and optimize efficiency.Configure, manage and troubleshoot firewall and security appliances—particularly Fortinet/FortiGate devices—to protect Genus’ network. Develop and enforce security policies, monitor network traffic, perform system updates and patches, and collaborate with IT teams to resolve security issues and maintain compliance.Support physical infrastructure and datacenter assets, including on‑premise virtualization infrastructure, bare‑metal hardware, server, backup and storage platforms. Plan and execute datacentre projects, expand compute and storage capacity, apply application and OS patches, and troubleshoot performance issues using observability tools. Embrace an automation mindset and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to streamline processes and drive continuous improvements. Requirements Proven experience designing and managing hybrid infrastructure projects that span on‑premises and cloud environments.Extensive hands‑on experience with VMware technologies (vSphere, vCenter, ESXi) and strong understanding of virtualization concepts, networking and storage.Demonstrable experience with Azure infrastructure services (virtual machines, storage, networking and backups). Hands‑on experience with Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools such as ARM templates or Terraform.Experience implementing and managing backup, failover clustering and disaster‑recovery solutions across cloud and on‑prem environments.Strong understanding of enterprise backup and recovery technologies, including hands‑on experience with Veeam; ability to design, implement and optimize backup and disaster‑recovery processes across cloud and on‑prem environments.Familiarity with security and identity solutions (PKI, MFA, Conditional Access) and experience implementing zero‑trust or SASE architectures.Strong scripting skills using PowerShell, Python or similar languages for automation.Experience with observability and network‑monitoring tools such as SolarWinds; ability to monitor and analyze network performance metrics (latency, jitter and packet loss) to detect issues early and maintain high system availability.Experience configuring and managing Fortinet/FortiGate firewalls and network‑security appliances; understanding of networking protocols and security concepts; ability to develop and enforce security policies and remediate security issues.Demonstrated experience supporting physical infrastructure and data‑centre operations in an Infrastructure DevOps context, including managing virtualization infrastructure, servers, storage and backup platforms, performing system updates and patches and executing data‑centre projects.Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or similar certification preferredAzure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect or other relevant Microsoft certifications.ITIL Foundation, TOGAF or other infrastructure‑framework certifications are advantageous Business OverviewGenus is a world-leading animal genetics company.
