Summary This position is part of the Office of Enterprise Assessments, Department of Energy. As a Health Physicist, you will conduct investigations of possible violations of the Department's nuclear safety regulations, review of all aspects of the radiation protection program for the organization's missions and tasks, and lead teams of DOE and contractor technical experts in the conduct of, investigations, inspections, reviews, and associated technical analyses. Responsibilities As a Health Physicist, you will: Evaluate highly technical and unique nuclear safety issues at DOE facilities to determine contractor compliance with DOE's nuclear safety rules, with a specific emphasis on radiological protection. Lead investigations and evaluations of non-compliances within the Department's nuclear safety regulations at DOE nuclear and non-nuclear facilities, with a specific focus on radiation protection. Prepare detailed reports and recommendations for enforcement action to federal and contractor management in both written and oral formats. Conduct investigations of possible violations of the Department's nuclear safety regulations. Recommend enforcement proceedings and outcomes in accordance with the DOE enforcement policy by evaluating the results of nuclear safety investigations and inspections. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENT: 1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. or 2. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or other education. or 3. Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in the paragraph one. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 of 3 of the following: Leading audits, inspections, or assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of nuclear safety program, specifically in the area of radiation protection. Analyzing nuclear safety issues to identify underlying trends, causes, and potential mitigations. Advising senior management on critical health physics issues that influence important programs or policy decisions. There are no substitution of education for experience for this position. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
