The Health and Fitness Facilitator develops, implements, and oversees health, fitness, and wellness programs for Norfolk Police Department recruits and sworn personnel, with a primary focus on recruit academy physical training, injury prevention, and tactical readiness. Designs and manages structured physical training programs that prepare recruits for the physical demands of law enforcement while reducing the likelihood of training-related injuries. Instructs fitness and wellness-related classes for recruits and sworn personnel. Monitors physical performance, training workload, recovery, and injury trends throughout the recruit academy using fitness assessments and performance data. Coordinates injury tracking, medical consultations, and return-to-training or return-to-duty processes with the department’s contracted medical provider and collaborates with command staff, academy instructors, and wellness partners. Tracks, manages, and processes recruit injury documentation and related records. Coordinates fitness-for-duty evaluations, return-to-training clearances, and annual physical fitness testing with medical providers as required. Will track all covid exposure questionnaires from personnel and disseminating recommendations and return to work status to commands and personnel. Conducts safety inspections of department fitness facilities and ensures equipment and spaces are maintained for safe use. Maintains current knowledge through continuing education and professional development in tactical fitness and injury prevention. Essential Functions ***The departmental hiring salary range for this position is $49,152.78-$56,403.94 annually*** Essential functions include, but are not limited to: + Evaluates recruit and employee physical readiness through fitness assessments measuring cardiovascular fitness, strength, endurance, flexibility, and body composition; coordinates annual physical examinations with medical providers. + Provides fitness education and counseling, including development of individualized exercise programs and instruction in conditioning, nutrition, and wellness principles. + Maintains accurate fitness, injury, and medical clearance records and prepares related reports or data summaries. + Collaborates with department leadership, academy staff, and medical professionals to support fitness, wellness, and readiness initiatives. + Designs and oversees structured physical training programs for police recruits that develop strength, endurance, agility, and resilience while emphasizing injury reduction. + Monitors recruit training activity, workload, and recovery to identify injury risks and trends; adjusts training as needed to support safe participation and performance. + Inspects department fitness facilities and equipment to ensure safety, functionality, and compliance with applicable standards. + Pursues continuing education and professional development related to tactical fitness, injury prevention, and occupational health. Education/Experience Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. One (1) year experience in health, fitness, and wellness. Most possess the following: + Valid Driver's License + Certified Personal Trainer + CPR Certification Additional Information & Requirements Preferred experience: + Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health sciences, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. + Experience developing and implementing physical training programs for tactical, high-risk, or physically demanding populations (e.g., law enforcement, fire service, military). + Experience monitoring training activity and identifying injury risks, including application of injury prevention and recovery principles. + Experience coordinating with medical providers or occupational health professionals regarding injury management, fitness-for-duty, or return-to-training decisions. + Experience maintaining fitness, injury, and performance-related records or data. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
