POSITION SUMMARY: Direct and coordinate athletic training services for student-athletes participating in the intercollegiate football program with the University of Miami Athletic Department, under the administrative direction of the Director of Football Sports Medicine, the medical direction of the Head Team Physician, the Director of Sports Medicine and in conjunction with a variety of other healthcare providers as well as U of M Athletic staff (including but not limited to athletic training, physical therapy, athletic coaching, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, behavioral medicine, academics, and administration).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Injury / Illness Prevention and Wellness Promotion

Assess risk of injury / illnessPerform functional movement assessmentsProvide appropriate interventions based on findingsDevelop overall wellness programsCustomize needs of individuals

Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis

Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiologyPerform ergonomic measures and special testsAssess injury / illness to determine the appropriate course of action

Immediate and Emergency Care

On-site management of injury / illnessOrthopedic or medical in naturePreparedness and implementation regardless of severityReferrals to advanced healthcare providers as appropriate

Therapeutic Intervention

Under medical direction of team physicianIn conjunction with other healthcare providersFollow appropriate rehabilitation protocolsUse of therapeutic modalities and exerciseProvide accommodations in sport related to injury / illnessAssess readiness for safe return to playGuide sport-specific functional progression

Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility

Coordinate pre participation physicals with Sports Medicine staffCoordinate official visits and evaluations with Sports Medicine staffPrepare injury reportsDocument in electronic medical recordCollect pertinent medical paperworkCollect injury incident data for research purposesCoordinate student-athlete medical appointmentsMaintain primary athletic training room for FootballMaintain certifications and licensures on national and state level as appropriateParticipate in continuing education opportunities, both individually and with the sports medicine staffPerform administrative duties for the Sports Medicine departmentAssist with policy / procedure development / implementationCreate / present professional programming as assignedParticipating in football staff meetings as needed.Follow NCAA, ACC, and University of Miami policies, procedures, and regulationsPerform job duties per NATA code of ethics and State of Florida scope of practiceManage physicians, physician fellows, chiropractic, manual Therapy and massage schedulesOrganize and administration of Athletic Training room for Football, including physician examination under director of team PhysicianCoordinate and management of FB campsOther Duties as Assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree required.

NATA certification required.

Eligible for Florida state athletic training licensure required.

EMT and /or IV certification preferred.

5 years of related experience in a sports medicine program required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Applied Knowledge: five practice domains of athletic training as well as a wide range of medical concerns

Interpersonal Skills: effective communication in both day-to-day tasks as well as high stress circumstances with Coaches, student-athletes, parents / guardians, as well as colleagues

Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision-Making Skills: appropriate conclusions / outcomes, particularly as it pertains to healthcare of the student-athlete

Attention to Detail: thorough and organized, particularly with preparation and documentation

Time Management Skills: prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision

TIME AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Primary responsibility will be the overall medical coverage of the intercollegiate football team. These duties may occur during non-traditional business hours, to include nights and weekends. Travel obligations will include away competitions and professional events.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands and environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; lift approximately 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision as well as peripheral vision. The noise level is usually moderate but escalates to high during practice and competitions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

SUPERVISORY ROLE: Supervision of certified athletic trainers and athletic training students.
