POSITION SUMMARY: Direct and coordinate athletic training services for student-athletes participating in the intercollegiate football program with the University of Miami Athletic Department, under the administrative direction of the Director of Football Sports Medicine, the medical direction of the Head Team Physician, the Director of Sports Medicine and in conjunction with a variety of other healthcare providers as well as U of M Athletic staff (including but not limited to athletic training, physical therapy, athletic coaching, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, behavioral medicine, academics, and administration).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Injury / Illness Prevention and Wellness Promotion
+ Assess risk of injury / illness
+ Perform functional movement assessments
+ Provide appropriate interventions based on findings
+ Develop overall wellness programs
+ Customize needs of individuals
Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis
+ Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology
+ Perform ergonomic measures and special tests
+ Assess injury / illness to determine the appropriate course of action
Immediate and Emergency Care
+ On-site management of injury / illness
+ Orthopedic or medical in nature
+ Preparedness and implementation regardless of severity
+ Referrals to advanced healthcare providers as appropriate
Therapeutic Intervention
+ Under medical direction of team physician
+ In conjunction with other healthcare providers
+ Follow appropriate rehabilitation protocols
+ Use of therapeutic modalities and exercise
+ Provide accommodations in sport related to injury / illness
+ Assess readiness for safe return to play
+ Guide sport-specific functional progression
Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility
+ Coordinate pre participation physicals with Sports Medicine staff
+ Coordinate official visits and evaluations with Sports Medicine staff
+ Prepare injury reports
+ Document in electronic medical record
+ Collect pertinent medical paperwork
+ Collect injury incident data for research purposes
+ Coordinate student-athlete medical appointments
+ Maintain primary athletic training room for Football
+ Maintain certifications and licensures on national and state level as appropriate
+ Participate in continuing education opportunities, both individually and with the sports medicine staff
+ Perform administrative duties for the Sports Medicine department
+ Assist with policy / procedure development / implementation
+ Create / present professional programming as assigned
+ Participating in football staff meetings as needed.
+ Follow NCAA, ACC, and University of Miami policies, procedures, and regulations
+ Perform job duties per NATA code of ethics and State of Florida scope of practice
+ Manage physicians, physician fellows, chiropractic, manual Therapy and massage schedules
+ Organize and administration of Athletic Training room for Football, including physician examination under director of team Physician
+ Coordinate and management of FB camps
+ Other Duties as Assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Master’s degree required.
+ NATA certification required.
+ Eligible for Florida state athletic training licensure required.
+ EMT and /or IV certification preferred.
+ 5 years of related experience in a sports medicine program required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
+ Applied Knowledge: five practice domains of athletic training as well as a wide range of medical concerns
+ Interpersonal Skills: effective communication in both day-to-day tasks as well as high stress circumstances with Coaches, student-athletes, parents / guardians, as well as colleagues
+ Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision-Making Skills: appropriate conclusions / outcomes, particularly as it pertains to healthcare of the student-athlete
+ Attention to Detail: thorough and organized, particularly with preparation and documentation
+ Time Management Skills: prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision
TIME AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Primary responsibility will be the overall medical coverage of the intercollegiate football team. These duties may occur during non-traditional business hours, to include nights and weekends. Travel obligations will include away competitions and professional events.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands and environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; lift approximately 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision as well as peripheral vision. The noise level is usually moderate but escalates to high during practice and competitions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
SUPERVISORY ROLE: Supervision of certified athletic trainers and athletic training students.
